Full Time Score from The U Lock It Stadium:
Witton Albion 1 1874 Northwich 0.
Witton remain in sixth place in the table but now only on goals scored. One point outside the play offs.
Well not sure what to make of that one - other than be glad for the 3 points! Could have been more than 1-0 but with Ollie Martin my MOM for a string of fine saves, it could have gone either way!!
Well, we didn’t play well so 3 points is nice! Keeps us in contention and pushes them closer to the relegation mix so will do for me.
Our football was a bit disjointed and a bit rushed, they fought well but had very little up front.
My MOM Koral closely followed by Martin. UTA
All that matters is the result, Witton 1 Holier-Than-Thou F.C. 0, three points to the Albion . Still in with an outside chance of a play-off spot, though not likely.
Meanwhile the Sanctimoanians are also in with a chance of a play-off spot for themselves. If they fail to get anything next Saturday against Workington then they would probably need to avoid defeat against Widnes to avoid the relegation play-offs.
We’ve played a lot better this season and lost so I’ll take that today.
Northwich is red once again.
MOM Barrow for me, thought he was excellent.
Another win against the plastics, great support today from the home fans UTA
Thought we looked exactly like a team hit by fatigue and absentees at the end of a challenging season. Credit to the players for hanging in there though - they’ve delivered in ‘big’ games the vast majority of the time this season. Wiping the floor with 1874 on Boxing Day will go down in Albion folklore.
Brilliant support behind the goal today too. Probably the best home atmosphere in quite a long time. Didn’t hear a peep from the nomads (again!)
Good old fashioned local derby with plenty of excitement. We only played in fits and starts but that proved to be enough thanks to Ollie’s superb keeping.
Good atmosphere and I think any neutral there would have been well entertained.
A neutral friend of mine came to the game and as you suggest was well entertained. It was a good atmosphere and redolent of derbies past. Getting those extra bodies in the ground makes a huge difference both to the atmosphere and financially too , so hope gates continue to grow and we prosper further
Not at our best, but a win’s a win.
Various duties prevented me from watching the whole match closely, so wouldn’t want to pick a MOM.
Having said that, Ollie’s double save in the second half was something special.
Good to see Kingsley Williams fit enough to come on as a late substitute following several weeks out with a serious eye injury.
It was a good day yesterday at Wincham. Im a big Alex fan but take in 1 or 2 Witton games a season. First time at a Witton v 1874 match. Decent atmosphere, i noticed Witton have more younger fans than 1874, and generally more passionate and vocal. Whats going on with 74? Ps. Why are they Holier than thou fc? Cause they think theyre special for starting a 3rd northwich team?
Welcome, Railway! Always good to see fans of other clubs taking an interest in the Albs. The younger element of our fanbase has really picked up over the last couple of seasons - I started watching Witton as a 14 year old in 2005/06 and I was one of only a handful of kids, so it’s brilliant to see young supporters (hopefully) forging life-long bonds on the terraces.
1874 seem to have reached their ceiling on the pitch and have no facilities off it, which is a major reason why they’ve stagnated. I think they’ve given up on getting their own ground (which was a pipe dream anyway) so their long-term future is renting at Barnton, which must be a sobering thought given the facilities. The only other option is Witton, but there’s plenty of reasons, both financially and emotionally, why that will probably never happen (unless Witton need it to, which may one day happen if/when Vics go pop).
All very complex, we’re an extremely dysfunctional football family in mid-Cheshire!
Cheers for the welcome Left Pegger. Witton also have a good academy and junior set up which will help forge those bonds. I live in Tarvin so a pretty short hop to northwich and nice set up at Witton. I heard 74 wanted to go to that proposed new FA set up at Winsford which I didnt understand as they talked about needing to be back in Northwich! Like you say, they will stagnate and go backwards with no ground, limited commercial revenues and limited junior set up. So Vics pay Witton rent but have lost half their fans to 74 and again, limited revenues i assume? With land and building costs, I just cant see how either 74 or Vics can afford their own ground. Ps. Who are Wittons biggest rival now, Vics or 74?
Throw in there that Witton rely to an extent on having a lodger contributing towards running costs of Wincham Park - we’re all snookering each other really!
Vics are obviously the traditional rival, but they don’t seem much of a threat these days and look destined to spend the rest of their existence in the NW Counties. So probably 1874 - though I can’t speak for everyone!
Thought the lads worked hard and it was obvious that they wanted the win. 1874 looked much improved from Boxing Day’s game.
Could have given MOM to several players, Oliver Hitchcox had a great game, as did Barrow. I thought Ducky was great, especially in the second half.
His flicks and passing of the ball often go unnoticed. He ran the length of the pitch at one point to defend and won the ball. He reads the game well.
Overall not the best I’ve seen Witton play this season but they fought hard and got the 3 points.
Onto Saturday now.
