Witton Albion v. Chasetown

Witton kick off their league campaign on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Chasetown to the U Lock It Stadium in a Northern Premier League West Division fixture.

The Scholars had an excellent season last time finishing fourth and making the play offs and are expected to do well again this time around.

They have made some decent signings but have also kept the majority of last season’s squad together.

Pre season has been good for the the Scholars, losing only one of their friendlies a 3-0 defeat to Rushall Olympic, so they go into the opening game in excellent form.

Witton have had a mixed pre season with some good individual performances but results not being as they had hoped.

New signings Tom Hoyle and Freddy Garbutt have already found the target in last week’s comfortable FA Cup success against Cheadle Town.

Joe Duckworth’s return from Stalybridge Celtic was a surprise for many but we know what he’s capable of and he’ll be looking to hit the ground running.

Defensive additions and the return of goalkeeper Cameron Terry will hopefully give Albion a platform to build from although the loss of Mike Koral was a big disappointment.

The two meetings last season saw the respective home team win by the odd goal in three with Damola Sotona and Mike Koral securing the points at the U Lock It Stadium in April.

Witton will look to make a good start to the campaign but Chasetown are tough opponents and this game will be no different.

Kick off at the U Lock It Stadium is 3pm.

A point to kick off the season. Witton are on the road on Wednesday night when they travel to new-boys Lower Breck for a 7.45pm kick off.

Witton’s first opening day goalless draw since August 22nd 1959 against Winsford United at the Central Ground.

Thanks to Chad & Andrew Simpson for that statistic.

Overall a good performance against what looks a good team.

Defence was excellent, wing backs did their job, midfield battled well and strikers did ok. But on a better day, we had enough chances to win that and 2 good penalty shouts turned down by a not so great set of officials.

Harrop was my MoM, full of energy and skill probably still need a strong defensive midfielder to sit in and control the game and I think Brazel is a better option in midfield with experience, energy and an eye for goals which we seem to lack but overall a good display, UTA

A good battling performance from Witton, I think we may have one of the best defences in the league a big improvement on last year.

With a better ref we would have won that game 2 blatant pens. At last we have a big centre forward to hold the ball, Freddy caused loads of problems to Chasetown we will get better with a few more games playing together,

Well done Witton.
