On paper the result looks horrendous, only in the last quarter were we put to the sword.Lancaster have been one of the best counter attacking teams i have seen this season,i would imagine they will view this season as a waste,i tipped them for promotion.
Yes we were picked off on many latter stage occasions but i thought the team gave a good account of themselves.Like Robbo quite rightly states, six old heads coupled with local talent is the way forward ensuring our club remains intact.
The pre-match parade was fantastic and full marks to Chad to once again deliver the goods. With Tony Hesketh being a good footballing man,i thought he may well have got carried away with the day and took his eye off the ball.
My eldest lad is big mates with Simon Hughes son and Simon and his wife regard Witton as their favourite club,so we are still doing something past and almost present right.
" At the end of the day " it is incumbent on the manager(s)and players to be successful with the priority being winning the league with the play-offs as a second chance ! If you don’t set your ambitions high then you will never succeed !
Nice Gut/Bad Guy doen’t always work either. I remember us appointing the team of John Bingham and Nigel Deeley during the close season a few years ago, and it didn’t even last through to the pre-season friendlies!
Bad Guy/Bad Guy just wouldn’t get off the ground.
I’m all for Nice Guy/Nice Guy, and very confident that this will work next season. I’m not sure that will mean promotion, but I am convinced that we will get just reward for the wages we will be able to afford.
Yep, setting your ambitions (too) high has certainly seen the likes of Portsmouth, Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton, Luton, Bradford, Scarborough, etc etc succeed.
Having ambition is great, but you also need to recognise your position in the grand scheme of things.
There are teams at this level who we just can’t compete with, and even attempting to would be madness.
We have been competetive over the course of the season, but we always knew certain teams would be at the top end of this league - and that is how it turned out.
I would agree with a lot Robbo says apart from one thing We are in the Evostick North League and I am absolutely convinced this is not the level Witton should be at ! if we were in Evostick premier and holding our hold and using local players I would be a happy bunny but we cannot settle for this level and at this time we need to have a bit more ambition - of course not at the expense of putting the club at risk. To be honest we have wasted money this year on players that have come in short term at the expense of other players eg matt doughty brought in & matt woods on the bench why ? adams brought in pritch/ben on the bench ? again why ? it cost money & did not work, so we need to watch our costs and use our money very wisely which might mean we can afford just a little more quality in the best 11, if we lose chester and chorley to the prem next year why can we not challenge for the title of course one or two other teams will be thinking the same but we can compete so why not ?
We may not lose Chester yet as they seem to be ‘doing a Witton’ at the moment and making very hard work of a healty lead, If Skem win that game in hand then they are level on points and we all know that anything can happen in the playoffs, also we might end up with Stockport in this league next season, now theres a bit of gossip for you.
