Witton bring the curtain down on Saturday afternoon on what has been a very disappointing season, when they welcome Basford United to the U Lock It Stadium in the final Northern Premier League Premier Division fixture of the season.
With relegation issues already confirmed, it would be nice for the team and supporters if they could end the season on a winning note.
Basford’s defeat to Mickleover FC on Bank Holiday Monday became irrelevant as Witton’s defeat at Warrington Town meant that Witton couldn’t finish outside the relegation zone and the final game is meaningless with only pride to play for.
If only Albion’s winning run towards the end of the season had come a bit sooner but then football is all about ifs, buts and maybes but they also say that the table doesn’t lie.
A season disrupted by injuries meaning the management team weren’t able to field a settled side, poor results and ill luck at important times doesn’t help but Witton will regroup and go again next season wherever they find themselves, and no doubt the supporters will be there as always to help them on their way.
Basford know where their future lies next season and can breathe a sigh of relief but Witton will be going out to finish the season in a positive manner as the pressure is no longer on them.
Although nothing has been announced officially, it appears that Rob Hopley’s Witton career is coming to a close and the guy has been immense during his time at the club and he deserves legendary status.
The final match preview of the season is tinged with sadness for everyone but we will be back next season and start all over again.
Let’s give it one last go and hopefully cheer the lads onto three points but Basford will be looking to finish in a positive way as well.
