Derby day returns to Wincham Park on Saturday afternoon, when we welcome our tenants Northwich Victoria in our second pre season friendly. Not only is this a pre season fixture, but it has more meaning than usual to everyone as the two teams will be contesting the Vijay Anthwal Shield, in honour of a great man and servant to Witton Albion Football Club and the community in general. It is hoped that the fixture can become an annual event and hopefully that will be the case. Derby games are usually keenly contested occasions and we wouldn’t expect this one to be any different. Witton will look to follow up their first outing against a very strong Crewe Alexandra side in midweek and increase their fitness levels, a game they more than coped with their league two opponents in the first half but Crewe’s fitness told in the end and the fact they had played more games. The game allows Carl and Gary to have another look at some of the trialists and at the same time, giving the squad more minutes ahead of the new season. Pre season friendlies are mostly about fitness and experimenting but, it is always nice to overcome your neighbours in any game. What’s more important is that the game is befitting of the occasion and that it becomes an enjoyable spectacle. Kick off at Wincham Park is 3pm.
