Witton Albion vs Northwich Victoria (Vijay Anthwal Memorial Shield)

Witton return to pre season action on Saturday afternoon when they welcome tenants Northwich Victoria in the annual Vijay Anthwal Memorial Shield.

Both teams have enjoyed a week’s break following the extreme weather conditions in midweek, which made football impossible and common sense prevailed as the health and safety of everyone involved rightly took priority.

This weekend we play as we have in the previous two years in memory of a great man Vijay Anthwal (Doc) to many of his friends who was a wonderful member of our community in both a professional and personal capacity.

His passing still remains of great sadness to everyone who knew him and he will be forever greatly missed.

The game is the third meeting between the two clubs and Witton have so far had the upper hand in the previous two, winning the inaugural event on penalties and then last season winning comfortably.

A lot of things have happened since that day and Witton begin a new chapter, in a new division with a new management team and a completely new playing squad.

Pre season has seen Witton draw two and lose the other of their three games so far but, it will take time for the new team to blend although there are early signs of promise.

Results are not important in pre season but they do build confidence ahead of the new season, which is still a few weeks away for Albion but Northwich will begin their league campaign in a week’s time.

Kick off at the U Lock It Stadium is 3pm.
