Another thing I’ve noticed is that the first goal in our games seems absolutely crucial. I think I’m right in saying that we’ve scored first in every game that we’ve won and the opposition have scored first in every game that we’ve lost.
It’s as if the way we’re set up is fine when we can dictate the play, when we’re on top, but we’re much less suited to chasing a game when the other team have a lead to defend.
I suppose that’s true of all teams to some extent but with us it seems a hard and fast rule.
My complaint is against the people of Northwich, not the people who are running the club. Clearly the club have tried all sorts of things to get people to the club - a big investment in the youth section, free tickets for military veterans, buses from town etc. I have no complaint there at all but the lack of interest from a sizable town is, well, sad? A disgrace? A reaction to years and years of squabbling between the people who were trying desperately to run two clubs in the town? Who knows? No doubt the Premier League, TV etc are all playing their part but Northwich is a bigger town than Chorley, Alfreton, Leamington, Spennymoor and plenty of others which get bigger gates than we do. We can’t blame the players or management, they are doing well and I think the way the club is run is a credit to the town. Perhaps the nonsense on the shit side of town has damaged football’s reputation but any neutral looking in on football in the town now would say its time to merge the three clubs together. I don’t want that and the two portions of shit seem to hate each other more than they hate us so there is no way they would go for it. However, back in the day, I was told the clubs wouldn’t merge while one was doing well and one doing badly. Well with hardly anyone in the town watching football, who could argue that anyone is doing well? The plastic shit would no doubt love to get away from that toilet of a ground and the real shit are in so much trouble that they might grasp at any kind of deal. I could be persuaded - as long as the name Witton remained part of the deal and our first kit was red and white…I genuinely thought that the real shit would have simply disappeared by now - they may still do so - but they haven’t yet and the plastic shit seem pretty determined - but is that because they haven’t had a better (or any) offer? We are in a much stronger position than they are, maybe it’s time to flex that muscle and offer them something. I look forward to receiving a torrent of abuse.
Sorry, Chris, I am a Wittoner, I could not support an amalgamated club no matter what its name was unless that name was Witton Albion. I remember a suggestion we call ourselves Witton Albion of Northwich and that went down like a lead balloon. No, we will soldier on in the hope that the people of the town will get the message one day. (A good Trophy run would help.)
