Witton look to put Tuesday night’s disappointment behind them on Saturday afternoon, when they welcome one of the title favourites in South Shields to Wincham Park in a Northern Premier League game.
The Mariners who are now operating on a full-time basis, have begun their campaign well with maximum points from their opening two games and sit second in the table behind Buxton on goal difference.
Like Witton, South Shields have also seen changes in personnel from the squad that was lying in sixth place when the season was ended, but the early indications are that they have assembled a squad that should be challenging at the top end of the table come the end of the season.
The two sides never got to meet last season with the campaign ending so early but, the last two league meetings both went in the Albion’s favour.
Two seasons ago, Albion took maximum points from the Mariners leaving it very late in the away meeting as goals from the since departed MJ Monaghan and an injury time winner from Kyle Sambor, also since moved on brought the points back to Cheshire. Then we went one goal better in the return game at Wincham Park, winning 3-1 with goals from Will Jones, a Danny McKenna penalty added to by Connor Heath.
Only four members of that Albion squad involved in that game remain at Wincham Park namely: Josh Wardle, Will Jones, Danny McKenna & Tom Owens.
Witton have now added teenage midfielder, Callum Leigh to the squad and he will give Carl and Gary another option as we progress further into the season.
Another tough game is in prospect and there is the potential of a decent sized crowd but challenges like this appear to bring out the best in Witton so let’s hope this is the case this time around.
Kick off at Wincham Park is 3pm.
