WITTON v Gateshead (League Game)

Robbo, I think you are a bit wide of the mark comparing the Wincham Rabbit with Bugs Bunny although he does, like me, "rabbit" on a bit. But most of what he says is spot on (unlike me!!).

Gateshead look to end Albion’s home brew
Feb 15 2008 Evening Chronicle

IN-FORM Gateshead will attempt to do what no other UniBond Premier Division side has done this season – take a point at runaway leaders Witton Albion.

The Cheshire outfit have won all 12 of their home league games so far this season, scoring 36 goals and conceding just seven, but Gateshead gained a psychological advantage last week.

A stunning debut goal from striker Paul Brayson gave the Tynesiders a 1-0 win at Witton in the quarter-final of the UniBond League Cup.

Albion rested a number of players, including former Sunderland reserves and ex-Gateshead loan keeper Jon Kennedy and former York and Hartlepool defender Tony Barrass, but will be close to full-strength tomorrow.

However, Gateshead player-coach Paul Thompson (pictured) believes his side can be the ones that end Witton’s 100% home record.

“Witton’s home record is excellent but we’ve won our last eight games and could have beaten them by four or five goals last week,” said Thommo.

“They had a few players out but we had one or two missing from the starting line-up and it will be another tight game on Saturday.”

Last season’s top scorer David Southern was one notable omission last weekend but Thompson is backing his fellow front man to bounce back.

“Davey has bitten the bullet. He’s a good player who has scored a lot of goals for the club and he’ll play an important part in our quest for honours over the next 10 weeks.”

Gateshead are without former Newcastle midfielder Kris Gate, currently on trial in Sweden, but are otherwise at full strength.

On-loan York City schemer Phil Turnbull deputises for Gate and wide man Jamie Harwood could be recalled unless a narrow three in midfield is preferred.

“Witton have to drop points at home some time and it’s important we get another win as we need to increase the pressure on them,” added Thompson.

Witton are 16 points ahead of third-placed Gateshead who have three games in hand of the Northwich-based pacesetters.

Match Pointers

JIM Vince has reported a clean bill of health as his side prepare to take on in-form Gateshead at Wincham Park on Saturday.

Albion faced the Tynesiders in the League Challenge Cup last weekend, narrowly losing out thanks to a Paul Brayson strike.

They hold a 16-point lead over the visitors and Jim told the Guardian that if his side perform to their capabilities they will win.

He said: "It’s a boost to have a full squad to choose from but it means there’s a few choices to be made regarding selection.

"If we perform well then we will beat them. We are looking forward to the game."

Gateshead player-coach Paul Thompson told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle he believes his side can be the ones that end Witton’s 100% home record.

“Witton’s home record is excellent but we’ve won our last eight games and could have beaten them by four or five goals last week,” said Thommo.

Was ‘Thommo’ at the same game as me??

 To be fair, Gateshead could and should have scored more than their one goal last weekend; probably explains why Craig Ellison was WAFC man of the match!

picko you said kris gate is on trial in sweden, what has he done ;D ;D ;D

what’s his de-fence?

Saw this on the Gateshead Blog:

Paul "Thommo" Thompson is Gateshead’s longest serveing player with ten years at the club, in those ten years Paul has had Brief spells at Stevenage Borough (then conference rivals), Bishop Aukland, Blyth Spartans and Whitley Bay.

So not really been there for tens years then?

Just to let you know that both the Non League weekly papers have made this match their picture featured UniBond Match so here’s hoping the demands for the Non-League Paper & Non-League Today at your local supplier will meet our requirements.

Hi,

I’d greatly appreciate it if anyone would tell me how far is the walk from Northwich rail station to Wincham Park. How long would it take ?

Ta in advance

A 20 minute stroll, about 1 mile, very easy. Check it out on multimap.

Thanks very much. I’d checked multimap but always find it hard to be sure how far it really is via a diagram.
