Bring on the Tynesiders
By James Wilson
JIM Vince has said he is looking forward to Saturday’s re-match against Gateshead.
Albion lost out to the Tynesiders in the League Challenge Cup on Saturday, thanks to a Paul Brayson wonder strike, but Vince told the Guardian the biggest game was yet to come.
He said: "It wasn’t a disappointment - I was quite pleased with the performance. If you look at the players who came in, in particular the younger lads, they accounted for themselves well.
"I have been consistent with my selection policy and I’ve used the competition as an exercise to give first team players a game if they need one.
"I don’t want to discredit the competiton but if I had wanted to win it I would have put a strong team out in every round. We have priorities this year, and that is to win the league."
Saturday sees Albion welcome the north easterners to Wincham Park again and the match could see Brian Pritchard setting a new appearance record for Witton - if selected.
He equalled the record of 604 appearances held by Alf Ashley when he skippered the side against Gateshead.
"Brian wasn’t as good as he normally was on Saturday", Jim said.
"It’s not all about one player at this club and at the end of the season I will congratulate him and hand him a bottle of Champagne, but I don’t want any distractions on Saturday. I’m employed to win things and I will celebrate with him when we win the league championship."
The Albion boss picked Gateshead as a rival for promotion back in the summer - now he has a chance to kick them out of the running.
"It’s a massive game," he said.
"The danger for us is coming from Gateshead and they know they must beat us to have any hope of catching us."
Albion head into the game 16 points clear of Ian Bogie’s men, who have three games in hand.
He said: "Gateshead were bigging themselves up after the game on Saturday but our lads should be confident. We are 12 games unbeaten at home in the league and I hope the lads perform to their capabilities."
