Witton v Lairds - Boxing Day

With attendances in the main declining, and the winter months less likely to see any substantial increase without some encouragement, Witton Albion, in conjunction with the Northwich Guardian, are hoping to entice ‘lapsed’ or potential supporters to the Club by running a ‘Families for a Fiver’ promotion starting with their Boxing Day encounter against Cammell Laird.

The promotion will run through to the end of January and if this turns out to be the success the Club hopes it will, then it will be extended through to the end of February.

Anyone purchasing the local newspaper can cut out the promotional voucher, which gives access to one adult and one child under-16 years-of-age for £5.00, for presentation at the turnstiles which will gain them access at the discounted rate. However, the Club do stress that this is a family promotion and the offer would be void should it not be one and one.

And to keep those winter chills at bay it’s also a ‘pie-for-a-pound’ during the same period.

Secretary Graham Shuttleworth said: "After relegation last season the Club has seen the number of spectators coming through the gate decline, and while we are not alone in this experience, we are doing what we can to arrest it. Hopefully we shall see a positive response from those who purchase the paper and perhaps, with the junior incentive too, families coming to Wincham Park in the long term.

"The best way for any club to reach a wider audience is through the media, so we are grateful to the Northwich Guardian for their support with this promotion, and who knows, if this takes off there may well be more to follow.

“We feel that the Boxing Day fixture is the ideal time to launch this promotion. After all the turkey and merriment of the previous 24 hours and the fact that everyone must have seen the Sound Of Music by now, I’m sure they’ll be in need of some fresh air when it’s time for the game to kick off, and even those batteries that run and run must be in need of a rest by then!!!”

Northwich Guardian sports editor Andrew Simpson added:"I think the Guardian has a role to play in trying to attract football fans in Northwich to watch Witton Albion.

"It is no secret that attendances at non-league matches across the country are falling this season, no more so than in Northwich after both of the town’s teams were relegated last season.

“Witton have decided to take the initiative by making a creative effort to get as many people as possible behind their push for promotion back to the UniBond Premier Division at the first attempt. The Northwich Guardian is more than happy to support them in their quest.”

Excellent idea.

Although… Am I the only one who is starting to worry the game won’t be on due to the weather?

Regarding this, we have around 500 leaflets for distribution, we are looking for a few volunters to distribute around Wincham/Pickmere. They should be available Tuesday night at the ground, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suppose everyone on here will get the hump if the game is off. :frowning:

I suppose ME it depends whether our pitch can survive, we need a long period without water!

We will have to ask the land owners in Scotland that one

we will be lucky to see any SHIPS on boxing day.
