Well done the lads!

well done boys good result at least it means our fixture list ent as congested if we had had this game called off but still its another game to fit in hopefully the uniobond league games will tkake precedence! Come on Witton!

The best news today was that all the league games were called off. We are not the only ones facing a fixture congestion.
Good result but we need people shooting on sight more, and where oh where are the missing fans? What more does this team have to do to get them to come to matches?

with ourselves woodley sports, fleetwood and probably matlock. Its looking like our name on the cup. Are the semis one leg or two.

Well done again to the lads, I’m sorry I couldn’t be there but a family emergency kept me away. Please see my other thread for tickets to Frank Bruno

Just as a matter of interest, the attendance at todays game of 192 was exactly the same as the previous round when Marine progressed by beating Leek Town 1-0.

Missing fans? To be fair its the league cup and I doubt that many extras would bother - I will be a lot more disappointed though it we get poor gates agianst Hednesford and especially Whitby (bring a friend day remember folks - 24th February)

Bext thing to come out of yesterday - no league games - we havent lost any ground!

Got a letter off to the local press about missing fans and how they should come back because this team is so good etc. Did you know since September 5th 2006 Witton have played 37 games won 25 drawn 6 and lost 6 scoring 88 goals in the process and concedeing just 38? That includes three fixtures against teams from a higher league!!! Turned into points that would be 81 points, championship form in anybody’s book.

UniBond League Challenge Cup ? Quarter Final

WITTON ALBION 1 MARINE 0 att 192

TEAM: Kennedy; Hockenhull, Pritchard, Spearritt, Brownhill (Barras 81); Connors (Moseley 75), Lloyd, Brown; Frost (Peers 69), Warlow, Jones G.

After the seven goal extravaganza seven days earlier both teams failed to come anywhere near repeating the entertainment in this cup-tie played with a biting wind blowing down the Britannia Carpets Stadium.

On 7 minutes though Rob Lloyd looked to continue last week?s scoring when he tried a lob from 20 yards out that just cleared the crossbar. Andy Ralph on the quarter hour mark initially flapped at a cross but as Carl Frost was shaping up to shoot the ex Albion and Vics custodian, destined for New Zealand at the end of the month, charged to the edge of the area to block Frost?s strong attempt. Liam Brownhill was next up to test the keeper but he comfortably saved at the base of the left post. Steve Connors then joined the shooting gallery but sent his fierce drive narrowly over the target.

Just after the half hour Brian Pritchard was on the end of a Lloyd flag kick but his headed attempt went just wide of the right post. Adam Warlow then produced good work evading three challenges but lost slight control and in the end his left footed attempt struck the side netting. However despite all their ascendance it was Peter Cumiskey who was guilty of missing a golden opportunity for the visitors as the match had entered 1st half stoppage time. Lee Mulvaney, having evaded his markers, made good ground down the right, Jon Kennedy came to narrow the angle and when the ball was played to Cumiskey, centrally placed he ballooned the ball well over the unattended goal.

Kennedy two minutes into the 2nd half produced a diving save as Cumiskey headed from close range and then Carl Nesbitt saw his shot deflected as Marine took the game to Witton. On 54 minutes Connors produced the classiest movement of the afternoon when he turned, advanced several yards before playing Warlow in. the striker shot in an instance but with half the crowd thinking that was the breakthrough the ball went a whisker past the left upright.

The crowd only had to wait a further four minutes for Albion to score the only goal and thus make it to the semi-finals for only the 2nd time in 27 seasons of trying. The all important strike came in the 58th minute when Carl Frost, wide on the right, centred and Alex Brown seemed to have an eternity with the ball at his feet. Several Marine defenders were in close attendance but not one of them tackled the midfield player. Striker GRIFF JONES was screaming for the ball and when eventually it was laid off to him he converted his 12th goal off the season with a rasping shot across keeper Andy Ralph and into the far side of the net. This goal earned him the privilege of not only netting Witton?s 100th goal of this season but also their 100th in this particular cup competition!
Brown on 65 minutes was centrally placed to receive Jones?s cross from the bye-line but headed straight at Ralph. Peers who?d replaced the unfortunate Frost who?d suddenly pulled up and limped off thoroughly dejected, then pulled the ball back from the right bye-line, Moseley left/missed/dummied and Pritchard lurking behind flicked the ball narrowly wide.

The final minutes saw Marine valiantly attempt to force the tie into extra-time but found Kennedy a massive obstacle as twice Cumiskey was denied and when the scorer of their great goal seven days previous Darren Brookfield blazed his shot over the bar with it went the Merseyside team?s hopes.

Lining up alongside Albion in the one-off semi-finals then are Fleetwood Town, Woodley Sports and the eventual winners of either Matlock Town/ Gresley Rovers/ Kidsgrove Athletic or Whitby Town.

Following the events of the previous Saturday’s league encounter, I think it was always likely to be a tighter contest with both teams changing their line ups.

In my opinion though, I thought we started better and controlled the game for longer periods as the afternoon went on. There were some excellent individual performances amongst the lads with Rob Lloyd showing his true class and Griff Jones working tirelessly all afternoon, being well rewarded for his goal.

The defence were back to something like their best and what can I say about Pritch, that hasn’t been said many times before.

Glad we got through to the last four but, as we all know there are far greater prizes ahead.

This was a good win as we were trying to avoid injuries yet still wanted it. I agree with WHS about the missing crowds. I can’t understand what people want and I wrote myself last week to the local press something I’ve never done in years. We are playing attractive football ,scoring goals, winning friends where ever we go, even some Vics fans think we are a good team yet some of our fickle fans stay away. It doesn’t matter that its only the league cup you try and support the team whatever game it is.To me this is the best side we’ve had since 1990. We are up there trying to win the league or at least get in the play offs. Even though Jim has been manager for a short time he is already for me in our top 5 managers ever. I believe if he stays with us and progresses with us he could be our best ever manager and I certainly believe if we can get our finances right Jim would take us all the way into the conference and keep us there. Our occasional fans must realise that they need to attend every match if they can and get behind the club, the manager and the players as we’ll never have a better chance than now of progressing. Jim can’t go on providing miracles every week on a shoestring which is why we need to get our fanbase up and try and get the gates up to over 300 every week. I’m even trying to get people at work to come and take a look so the bring a friend day is certainly a good place to start!! C’mon the Albion lets go for it!!
