Witton v Whitby

UniBond Premier Division Saturday February 24th 2007

WITTON ALBION 7 WHITBY TOWN 2 att 412

TEAM: Kennedy; Spearritt (Hockenhull 58), Pritchard, Barras, Brownhill; Peers (Proffitt 65), Lloyd, Brown, Connors (Clegg 55); Warlow, Moseley.

The Britannia Carpets Stadium highest league crowd of the season were treated to a scintillating display by the home team and an individual 5 Star Scoring spree from Adam Warlow.

Until they got two consolation strikes in the final 20 minutes Town, who had play-of aspirations of their own, could only show 3 corner kicks to their credit. The 5th minute saw Steve Connors?s through ball intercepted but the ball screwed off a defender and WARLOW ran on to round keeper Jack Norton before planting the ball into the unguarded net. Rob Lloyd then saw his shot flash across the face of the goal before Norton pulled off a good save when he pushed Alex Brown?s driven shot onto the upright. On 22 minutes a Lloyd in swinging corner from the left was met by Warlow but his glancing header just evaded the far post. Five minutes later though a superb defence splitting pass from Neil Lloyd arrived at Mark Peers?s feet, he whipped in a cross that although Mike Moseley just failed to reach there was WARLOW lurking at the far post to crisply convert.

On 33 minutes another Lloyd corner looked to be destined for the far corner of the net only for Alex Janes to head off the line. The next move then saw Danny Farthing suitably placed on his goal-line but not really knowing too much about it to deny Moseley following a smart cross ball from Warlow. A minute after Town had Graham Robinson straight red carded (he?d received a yellow 8 minutes earlier) for kicking Connors right in front of referee Duncan, Albion went 3-0 up in the 37th minute, following excellent approach work from Peers and a Tom Spearritt cross that WARLOW headed home to claim his hat-trick. With half-time beckoning an audacious back-heel from Moseley shaved the post after Norton could only parry Brown?s free-kick.

Three minutes after the break Liam Brownhill?s dazzling diagonal run saw him then clip the ball across and although Norton got his hands to WARLOW?s shot the ball still entered the net. The 53rd minute then saw Connors bowled over in the box only for the referee to wave play on. 5 minutes later PEERS himself, with the sorry visiting defenders totally mesmerised, fairly lashed the ball into the roof of the net. The very happy Wittoners then had to wait10 minutes before it was six for their team, substitute Dorryl Proffitt got into good position in the area but missed a chance himself, however the ball ran to WARLOW who finished clinically to take the long-term loanee from Crewe Alexandra?s total on to 25 for the season. Quickly after it was only a fingertip save from Norton that denied the striker.

Albion then took their feet off the accelerator and following a clumsy challenge by Proffitt against James Drinkall, Danny BRUNSKILL converted a 72nd minute spot-kick. It was Town?s own leading scorer BRUNSKILL who then capitalised on Albion defenders themselves holding back when he fired past Jon Kennedy 8 minutes later. The afternoon?s scoring though was left to the ?veteran? Albion striker MIKE MOSELEY on 83 minutes, following a great through ball from Ross Clegg and a lay-off from Proffitt, who fired his shot across Norton to register his 145th goal for the club.

There was still time left though for Norton to produce a good flying save to deny Brownhill before Tony Barrass saw his effort cannon against the woodwork.

More Stats, following this excellent result:-

Not only did Albion move up to 2nd in the table but Adam Warlow is now in a similar position at the top of the UniBond League scorers.

The 7-2 result is the highest league victory since the same score-line over Stocksbridge Park Steels in January 2002.

It was in November 1983 that this Premier Division result was bettered, Horwich RMI suffering a 7-1 mauling at the Central Ground.

Adam Warlow?s personal 5 goal tally is the best since John White netted 5 against Netherfield (Kendal) in February 1982. He therefore can now add himself to the auspicious list of Frank Fidler, George Stubbs, Trevor Ogden and Peter Henderson.

A look at all the league tables displayed on the teletext/ceefax services shows Albion?s tally of 71 to be the highest of any other team -not only in England but Scotland and Wales ? and we?ve played fewer matches!

Telford must be bricking it!

The 6th March is going to be a crackeroo.

Witton in this form, which is no flash in the pan, are unstoppable. Griff out injured and we still scored 7!!

E I E I E I O…Up the Football here we go…

What can you say? Excellent, tremendous, fantastic and supereb tactics by JK? get a yellow card today meaning a one match ban against Fleetwood in the league cup so misses no league games. ;D Crowd numbers creeping up too and happy hour in the club before all remaining matches… happy days

IF ONLY VICS HAD LOST!!! I have been saying it for months, the championship is ours. "And now you gotta believe me, we’re gonna win the league"!!! Time to start singing it I think instead of just hoping.

From the non league web site;

The top of the UniBond League Premier Division is beginning to look very interesting indeed with Witton Albion relentless in their pursuit of top spot.

They beat last week?s second-placed side Hednesford Town 3-0 on Tuesday and then hit seven against Whitby Town, who themselves have been hovering in or around the play-off spots all season.

Albion?s Adam Warlow (pictured) became the first player to find the net five times in a UniBond game this season and, thanks to Lincoln United holding leaders AFC Telford United to a draw, Witton are now six points behind the Bucks with two games in hand and a better goal difference after scoring an amazing thirty goals in their last seven league games.

Well that was awesome wasn’t it - as stated above I think the game was pretty much won before they went to 10 men (a bit like Hednesford really) after that we just went about our business.

A quick look back at the last few games - marine, Hednesford, Guiseley, Whitby to get 12 points from that run is pretty incredible - ask yourself honestly what would you have settled for before today? 8 points? What the team have achieved has been tremendous - and as stated before - not exactly scrappy 1-0’s either! Telford must be very worried now - but we can’t take our foot off the pedal.

Shame we don’t have a mid-week game I was rather starting to enjoy this!

With every win in the league costing me a fiver I am glad we have no mid-week game!!! Only kidding, I cannot wait for Len to take the next fiver off me and at least a dozen more before the end of the season, that should do us for the championship.

This made me laugh on the Whitby forum, they were asking what they thought the headlines would be in their local paper and one has obviously read our local papers too;

reading the Northwich Guardian it’ll probably be:-

VICS THROUGH IN TROPHY

NORTHWICH RUGBY TEAM WIN A THRILLER

LOCAL FISHERMAN CATCHES HUGE CARP

PIG AND WHISTLE DARTS TEAM DOING WELL

WITTON DO OK AGAINST RUBBISH TEAM

Oh dear Picko.

Really couldn’t resist could you? ::slight_smile:

Andy I mearly cut and paste a Whiby fans posting, and no I couldn’t resist :smiley:

Starting to run out of superlatives for the way the team is performing ;D

Absolutely outstanding team performance from start to finish.

Every games a cup final but I honestly think we will outnumber Ashton on Saturday!

Absolutely top rate stuff from Jim Benny and the lads. The goals were all superb and lets face it Whitby are no mugs!! I didn’t see a better match on the telee this weekend. Arsenal are about the nearest team to us as regards passing and move game. The club is just a great place to be at the moment and I have to go back to 1990 when I last felt like this confident in the fact that we would go out and win!! Jim says if we win 5 more we are in the play offs and if we win ten more games we will be champions. I don’t want play offs as they are a lottery lets go and win it. The top teams don’t scare me its the teams like Ashton on Saturday and Gateshead who will try and kick us off the park. Mind you Hednesford tried that didn’t they and look where it got them. As long as we get decent refs and a fair rub of the green then I really fancy us. Keep going lads absolutely superb and a joy to watch.

in previous postings i have openly criticised mark peers performances and cross ability but aftter saturday i thought he was outstanding and took his goal superbly. His passing was top notch. In whole we were excellant and no one would of lived with us on that performance. THE TITLE IS IN OUR HANDS NOW we just have to believe we can do it ’ cause i do.

I have been believing it since the start of the year, where have you been? There is NO way this team, playing the football it is, can fail to win the title. There maybe the odd "blip" but I am sure we will win at leaset 10 of our remaining 13 league fixtures.

Many miles away yet again, but watched the Whitby game again on Unibond TV. Would like to have said "enjoyed the game again" but the coverage is rubbish. Picture quality = grim, sound = poor, editing = shoddy, commentary = pathetic.

How can they charge for that coverage? I sent them a mail complaining, but no response. Also, when you enter your credit card details, there is no indication that you are in touch with a secure server. So beware!

Our friend from Otley came along to the Guiseley game and was so impressed he made the journey across for the Whitby match! He was last seen singing "Who needs Mourinho… " and "Five yellow cards…" in the Bull Ring Birminham Saturday night! Another convert I think.

While on the subject of Unibond TV the following from Whitbys website;

I’ve just watched the highlights from Saturday’s game, www.unibondleague.com and follow the link at the top of the screen.

Lee Nogan was interviewed after the match, and while the sound quality wasn’t great, Lee said his side were second best all afternoon, Witton had superior passing and movement and while the sending off had no bearing on the result, he was disappointed with the "finicky" referee. Nogie was actually waiting for a free-kick to us when Robbo was sent off, and at second glance it’s hard to see what Robbo did wrong- though the ref indicates he kicked out. As I mentioned in my report, their keeper was booked for booting the ball away after our first goal and Nogie said the ref should’ve just got on with the game, which is fair enough.

He went on to back Witton for the title, and described them as the best footballing side we’ve played all season. Finally, he added that the play-offs were still wide open but we’ve got two home games that we must win coming up- obviously, that was before the Ashton fixture change
