15 May 2008 - Statement from the Football Club, 1861 Tigers Trust and Worksop Town Supporters Club

Two representatives from each of the above bodies met at the Lion Hotel last Friday evening to hold “clear the air” talks and discuss the current situation concerning the lock out at Sandy Lane.

One of the main aims of the evening was to clarify the stance of Worksop Town Supporters Club in the dispute between 1861 Leisure Ltd and the Football Club. A considerable number of topics were discussed including how the Supporters Club and Tigers Trust could work together for the good of the club. Everyone was left in no uncertain terms as to the gravity of the situation we find ourselves in.

The Supporters Club Committee subsequently met on Wednesday evening and was asked by the Football Club to confirm that:

They are in full support of the Football Club and would like to distance themselves from the actions of 1861 Leisure Ltd in locking the club out of the ground and that they totally disagree with this course of events;
They would recommend to their members that they refrain from using the clubhouse premises whilst the club remains excluded from the ground;
Despite having been offered the use of Sandy Lane for the Worksop Town Supporters Club Sunday League team next season, to the exclusion of Worksop Town Football Club, that they had rejected this offer having confirmed at the Friday meeting that this categorically would not happen;
The Supporters Club would be willing to contribute towards any fund-raising events being organised by the Football Club to enable them to meet costs surrounding the dispute.
Following the Supporters Club committee meeting, the Football Club has been informed that four committee members, David Savage, Kevin Dexter, Andrew Dexter and Trevor Reynolds have resigned from the committee. The Football Club have been informed that it is the intention of the Sunday League team to play on the Sandy Lane pitch next season under a different name, no longer being part of the Supporters Club.

The remainder of the committee members present were totally in agreement with the above four requests and wish to make it clear that they are entirely behind the Football Club. It is intended that the Supporters Club will introduce new committee members and will move forward in working with the Football Club and the 1861 Tigers Trust.

It is intended that a public meeting will be held as soon as the club’s position has been clarified by its advisers and it is then able to provide the facts to all interested parties. The time and venue will be provided at a later date.

Access to Sandy Lane Denied

Worksop Town is extremely disappointed to report that the Football Club was yesterday denied access onto the ground by 1861 Leisure Ltd. Club officials arrived in the morning with the intention of commencing preliminary maintenance work on the pitch, only to find that the gates had been chained and padlocked. Instructions have been received to remove all of the club’s property from the ground. As yet we have not received any official explanation for these actions and constructive discussions are underway with Bassetlaw District Council concerning the club’s position. The Council has been very supportive and is actively looking at how the situation can be resolved. Continuous dialogue with the Council will be maintained and further developments will be notified to supporters as soon as possible.

These events have hampered preparations for the Sheffield Senior Cup Final with the club having to make alternative arrangements for training at Worksop Rugby Club. Many thanks for their assistance with this.

The continued backing of our supporters is essential and would be greatly appreciated.
