Commercial concerns

And we’re in no position to be snobs gentlemen…

Yes in an ideal world we would be sponsored by greenpeace and unicef and so on, but let’s be realistic.

At least these companies aren’t in the process of stitching up the tax man like some others i could mention…

  1. What a stupid example!

  2. And the week after we send that article to the press we can send another article explaining why our ethical stance caused us to go out of business!

Frankly if as Robbo says the sponsor is suitable for involvement with Fifa and the World Cup then I think they more than pass for a suitable partner.

I suppose really we can rule out car companies due to environmental damage, alcoholic drinks companies due to binge drinking and other health issues, publishing companies as they chop down too many trees! All of which is equally stupid as the previous suggestion.

Let’s put an end to the discussion before ruling ourselves out of further prospective sponsorship deals!

???

Thanks for all your comments, no bad comments just peoples own opinions. The plan is to work with sponsors who recognise and support witton, I think there are always two sides to each story, I will endeavor to be mindful of all our views in all that the work party do.A good part of Coca Cola wanted very much to sponsor Witton, i will continue to help them to improve there image and working with Witton can only help them. Regards Wayne Peach

…and an excellent post, well done Wayne.

Wayne your doing great mate we certainly need big companies to sponsor us as well as local business’s and fans so anything your’e doing in this arena is great. I like your approach and the way you communicate on here and hope you have a long association with this great club of ours.

I absolutely appreciate all the work that the people who work for the club do but I stand by my comments - just because Coca-Cola and McDonalds are involved with the World Cup or the Premier League does not make them a great advert for sport. My local primary school here in Birmingham is sponsored by Cadbury’s for Gods sake - how can that have been allowed to happen? Accepting cash from all-comers can bite you in the bum - football at the highest levels has lost all morality because it has done just that. I would prefer it if my club didn’t go down that road. Obviously I’m in a minority on this one…!

You’re probably relieved that we are now out of the FA Carlsberg Trophy then!!!

I think people appreciate your stance Chris in that in an ideal world everyone would drink fair trade coffee, never wear a pain of jeans stitched in a sweat shop in Manilla and only eat organic sprouts (bad example as I hate sprouts that are chemically treated or organic)!

The question is how far do you take the stance and how realistic is it to take such a position commercially? The fact remains that in our case (and frankly it is the same for any football team in the pyramid) that relationships with corporate sponsors such as Coca-Cola, McDonalds and Carlsberg are all perfectly acceptable and welcomed investments into our club. You would reduce the potential targets enormously if we narrowed down the criteria so ethically. Their football teams up and down the land sponsored by beer companies and online gambling companies and your arguements would I am sure be the same.

These organisations have much bigger shop windows than Witton Albion and therefore we should in all honesty be proud that we are able to attract such involvment.

If you have a tea break at some point during the afternoon please check that the coffee or tea is fair trade as that is one of the largest ethical offenders in the modern world!!!

We are all debating this because we all care about our club, thats one of the many reasons why Witton Albion is very special and because "its OUR club".
Im so glad that we have got off to such a fantastic start. thanks Wayne Peach

Whilst I agree with Chris on this I think we should remember that our Stadium was called "The Bargain Booze Stadium" not so long ago. The fact is ALL football has lost it’s soul and has sold out to big business be it Coca Cola, American businessmen or Russians or Asians. It is a sad fact of life, but again, I have to agree with Chris, I am saddened that Witton have gone this way too.
WHS.

Whilst long-time Witton supporters continue to stay away from WP, then we really can’t afford to be turning good money down.

If we are to consider not taking money off companies such as Coca Cola and McDonalds because they do not practice healthy living. Then perhaps we should consider stopping selling pies, chips and chocolate at games. I don’t think I have ever read such nonsense as to why we should not take a sponsor’s money.

Quite right Rob, you are spot on. I’m just waiting for someone to say we should pull out of the league because it is sponsored by glue makers!!. Lets get back to the positive things for the club, and end all this rubbish,. Yes, people are entitled to there comments, but things have been taken too far.

WHS:

Where you were a lickle lad (no pun intended) did your mum have to get up early, put the sticks in the fireplace, light a match and put a piece of newspaper to draw the fire.

And did she then add coke or coal a?  :

I like your stories in the local press this week about the foreigners in the Premiership.

Well, isn’t it about time you came and watched Witton (made up of many England players) - so we’ll see you on Saturday. Do you need a lift?

GE

ENJOY THE REAL THING

Rob and John8 should take a long hard look at what Coca Cola get up to in places like India and Columbia and then ask again if it is really nonsense. Or cover your eyes and open the wallet.

Thought this section was for ideas on raising money.

P.S.

Perhaps we could all come to the match on Sat on the Greenpeace boat up the canal !

Because it’s been on Tele and must be true

Why are we all arguing again?! :-

Chris, i think you need to admit defeat on this one! We can all see you point - HOWEVER, if Witton were to do the unthinkable and get promoted to the football league would you suggest that we should not take our place due to Coke’s sponsorship?! Other clubs at our level would snap Coke’s hand off to get the money, so we as a club should not disadvantage ourselves.

We’ve heard you out on this, but i think it’s time to focus all of our efforts on something else.

I read this with so much interest, there are many other local companies that i will along with our workparty go and see to hopefully gain their support, I am confident of gaining their support, so we may not have to call on the like of Coco Cola, which if we can achieve enough from our own community then we can hold our heads even higher.Coke was just a short term fix. Thanks for all your comments for and against. Wayne Peach
