But probably the best performance by a wiiton team was v whitby when we beat 7-2 a couple of years ago. I swear the football we played that day some football league clubs wouldnt of lived with us.[/quote]
I remember the weather being absolutely dreadful and Warlow scored 5!
Another great game for me was a couple of years a go against Stalybridge Celtic in the Cheshire Senior Cup Final played at Alty’s ground.
I entered a raffle and won the prize of being in the dressing room before the game, and being allowed to give the pre-match team chat, and sit on the bench during the game.
We had a very weakened team for this game as several loan players from Crewe were ineligable, and I think we had 4 or 5 reserve players playing on the night.
The pre-match team chat went along the lines of that I would give a bottle of champagne, not to the best player, but to the player who encouraged the rest of the team to perform the best.
I gave the award to our keeper on the nighy, but found out afterwards that he was too young to drink it,
Against all odds, we won comfortable, and Pritch poured the bottle of champayne over my head, after the game.
The only downside was that I had to purchase a pair of football boots to wear on the bench.
I will have to remember to bring them to the Warrington match in support of KITAID
F.A.Trophy semi final 2nd leg at Wincham v Kidderminster, 91 I think, we won 4.3 with a very late Jim McCluskey header to take us to a replay at Stafford, we lost.
Also away to Wycombe FAT, Halifax FAC, and Marine FAT, fantastic memories of a time in our history I doubt we will ever re live…
One game I’ll never forget is Altrincham 5 Witton 5 in the old Cheshire league circa 1967. Altrincham were a top side at the time, run by Noel White and Peter Swales, managed by Freddie Pye and with the immortal Jackie Swindells at centre forward. Alty biltzed us in the first half and ran up a 4-1 lead before Ken Barnes scored a penalty to make it 4-2 with the last kick of the first half.
Any hopes of a recovery seemed dashed when a trademark Swindells diving header made it 5-2 just after the restart. Then with about 20 minutes to go Paddy Daly hooked in a shot from the edge of the area for 5-3. With about 5 minutes left Barry Wheatley hammered one in from 20 yards for 5-4. Then in the last minute a corner to witton and a mad scramble that seemed to go on forever before Trevor Ogden (I think) put it in the net. Cue pitch invasion from ecstatic witton fans.
I was only 10 years old at the time and all the above is from memory. That’s how etched on my brain it is! Even though I was so young I remember thinking at the time I might not ever see a better game than that. I still have the programme.

This is one of mine too - we left at 3-3 (might even have been 2-3 - did we score two late?) to beat the traffic… But back then you’d get the scores on the radio, GMR or Picadilly, and I remember hearing we’d taken it to a replay on the radio on the way home.
I remember that Alty game, it was pure magic. I always remember what Ken Barnes said to a group of us in the club when we were complaining about a certain player; we said he was good but too lazy and Ken replied “Sorry lads but I am a sucker for a footballer.” Probably why we didn’t win much under him but what football we played!
WHS.
Just too many really, it makes my head hurt trying to remember them, FA trophy semi obviously, any game beating V**s, I do have more fond memories from the central ground I guess but thats just an age thing, beasting Rossendale 7-3 on a stormy night sticks out for some strange reason, the match winning promotion to the conference was special - but I cannot think who we played but vaguely remember the celebrations after. Just too many.
One of the strangest games I recall was the last game of the season away at Eastwood town a few years ago which we won 5:4. Think it was on a Friday night and neither team had anything to play for but proceeded to kick absolute lumps out of other with numerous little fights starting all over the pitch. No reason for it and I think with it being the last game of the season the ref took a very lenient view. Other games that stick out probably due to the goalfest, are the Congleton games over the festive period about 10 years ago.
Great thread been giving this quite a bit of thought before posting 2 games stand out for me both from the 90`s
November 91 v Halifax at the Shay FA Cup replay 1-2 to the Albs with goals from Thomas + Grimshaw
Easter Monday 93 v V£$s at the original swamp 1-3 with 2 goals from Brendan Burke and the other from Carl Alford
One game that meant so much for me was my first game as a Witton Albion Director, again back in 1992. This was an away game in the FA cup 2nd round proper, against Preston North End. I did not go straight to the board room, as I had to help David Leather with the players comps. By the time I entered the boardroom, I was greeted by an old man. He poured me a cup of tea, but then decided it was stewed, so he went off to make me a fresh pot. He returned with some fresh tea, and a plate of biscuits.
My hand started to shake when I looked over his shoulder to see a photograph of him on the wall. It was only then that I realised that the great Sir Tom Finney had just gone out of his way to make me a cup of tea.
Although we were still in the match until half-time, an under-hit back pass by Lea Coathup to Keith Mason was our undoing.
After the match, the coach left without me, and I was stranded in Preston. Luckily, I spotted John Davidson and Paul Lodge leaving the car park, and cadched a lift to the M6 where I caught up the team coach.
FA Trophy quarter final at Layer Road against Colchester United. We won 2-0 with Joe Connor scoring both goals deep into injury time. One of his goals was scored by Joe receiving the ball on the halfway line infront of the main stand and beating everybody before smashing the ball into the net infront of us all.
The term smash and grab was invented from this day on.
Some united fans at the final whistle poured onto the pitch goading us for a response. One lad was pulled to the ground by a police dog.
What a wonderful memory Thatch, can you imagine our present over paid stars doing such a thing? I saw him play just once live at Manchester City I think, don’t remember much about the game, I was probably no more than 12 or 13, but so many rate him greater than Mathews he must have been VERY special in his day.
WHS.
Yes Colchester away was superb, we made a lot of noise in the low covered stand I dont think for a second they thought they would lose that one
can still remember the bad old days when our coach used to get the windows stoned in ? came back from one game with the windows out and it was bloody freezing, used to be lots of problems in the 70s, southport, frickley etc were not the best of places to go then
Lovely thread this, one of the main reasons we survived in the mid 90’s was because so many Wittoners got together very quickly to ensure we didn’t lose our football club, very much based, of course, on memories such as the great ones posted previously.
Glad the Colchester match has surfaced at last, probably my personal favourite, who can forget the “usual moaning grandads bunch” dancing and singing along with the remnants of the old Central Ground Choir plus of course the most welcome new band of younger followers.
The F.A. Cup replay at Buxton in 1989 also brings visions of glee especially from when after winning 6-4 aet the landlord of the Cat & Fiddle thinking he was about to close very quickly reversed tactics to satisfy the hoardes who piled in.
Gerry Duffy breaking my very noisy rattle in the Cheshire Senior Cup tie at Crewe in 1961 when his fierce shot at the Railway End went whistling past the upright and in defending myself the prized possession took the full brunt! I did quickly forgive him on the following Wednesday when his two goals won us the replay against Hyde United.
Finally, Pritch’s testimonial, what an array of Albion legends and greats assembled. Combined with the official opening of the Museum indeed a full testimony of what our wonderful Club is all about.
There’s some absolutely brilliant stories in here.
Marine away four years ago today was a cracker. A 2-0 win and I think we took about 200 there too! Unfortunately the Fleetwood game followed on the Monday…
Despite the result, I still feel extremely proud of our performance in the FA Trophy away at Matlock in 2009 after drawing the first game at WP. If memory serves me right we were injury hit and had to play a few inexperienced players on the night. 2-0 down at half time, then 3-1 down shortly after with keeper Joe Clegg getting sent off. Pritch had to go in goal and we scored two goals in two minutes including a 30 yard volley from Peter Heler! :woohoo: Unfortunately Matlock scored again deep into extra time to send us crashing out.
The support that night was absolutely tremendous (as always). I remember reading on their forum how much they thought of our away support too. It just goes to show how much noise we can make when we’re fired up. Let’s start tomorrow, massive month for the club.
