Hednesford v Witton Albion 26th Jan

I think you’re right Eli that we should be able to close out the game at 2-1 up, the point I was trying to make was that I didn’t think the 2-1 lead looked like being enough - this is probably reflective of the overall performance and the type of game it was. I said 15 minutes before the end that at 2-1 it was not over, not least as the referee was not in control (in my opinion).

Your point of taking the ball into the corners and wasting time (as is done to us) is a good one, I think we only know one way of playing, which is attacking flowing football - maybe we will learn from yesterday’s experience. We certainly went looking for a third and as you say if we had been more intent on closing it out perhaps could have contained them in the final period. It’s a valid argument. With Brown and Morning both going off in midfield and Macca and Brodie missing maybe we were ‘top heavy’ rather than sufficiently strong in midfield.

As I said in my previous post I have seen us play worse than that and take all three points, but we are now in the business end of the season and need to make sure that when we’re in a leading position away that we end up leaving with maximum points.

Might be of interest. Worth noting that we have played 14 games away and only 12 at home whilst Fleetwood have played 12 at home and only 10 away. To put it into perspective; that means we have only 6 away games left, they have 10.

HEDNESFORD TOWN 2 WITTON ALBION 2

Team: Kennedy; Coo, Pritchard, Barras, Brownhill; Peers, Lloyd, Brown (Kearney 66), Morning (Evans 73; Warlow & Thornley. Sub n/u Brodie

Man of Match: Rod Thornley att. 554

With five minutes left on the clock Jon Kennedy looked to have done enough when he dived and pushed away a vicious Rory May cross from the left. Unfortunately the ball flew straight at Liam Brownhill who, aware that substitute Alan Nagington was lurking, saw the ball strike him and rebound into the net to give the Pitmen their first point against Albion at the fourth time of asking.

A much larger crowd than normal, boosted by yet another three figure travelling Wittoners, were at the New Cross Keys to witness this encounter and the away following were somewhat justified to be annoyed when in the 6th minute Rod Thornley had the ball in the net following Adam Warlow’s knock-on after Cavell Coo had played a great ball forward, at the worst Thornley looked level with the last defender but up went the assistant referee’s flag. On 12 minutes again a questionable decision as Albion were awarded a free-kick right on the edge of the area when even the home supporter nearest me though the offence was committed inside the box! The end result though was Mark Peers striking the ball over the wall with keeper Ben Scott getting the slightest of touches but the man in black awarded a goal-kick.

In the 20th minute following a nice series of interchange play between Coo and Peers the keeper comfortably held Warlow’s headed attempt. The ball was quickly delivered upfield and when Sam Hall headed on to May the big striker was guilty of a poor finish. Five minutes later though and it was Albion’s top marksman who was in the dock when he screwed his shot wide with the goal seemingly at his mercy following excellent approach work by Thornley and the newly signed man, from across the canal, Adam Morning. Just before the interval Thornley slipped on the pitted surface and caught a couple of home players’ boots into his body for his pains that saw a three minute stoppage to events. Upon the resumption Albion were caught napping on their right with the ball accurately delivered to the far post allowing Ross Dyer to strike firmly past Kennedy.

However the final minute of the allotted add-on time saw Coo, who’d been guilty of allowing the home side too much room for their goal, switched play to the opposite end and burst into the box and played a lovely one-two with Rob Lloyd but was denied when defender Ben Brown hacked the ball off the goal-line, however first to react was ADAM WARLOW to delightfully convert his 20th goal of the season.

With a strong wind blowing it was difficult for both sides to establish a grip during the opening minutes of the second period however on the hour-mark Morning won the ball well and played Thornley in, the striker made a couple of turns but could only send his shot wide of the near left hand upright. Shortly afterwards though in the 64th minute Lloyd showed lovely control before prodding the ball forward for Thornley, initially the chance looked to have gone as defenders covered the gap, however ROD THORNLEY produced an audacious 10 yard toe poke with his right foot and the ball just squirmed inside the left post. The striker’s celebratory dance, duly exaggerating his right toe, was a treat to behold for the Albion masses!

On 71 minutes and from a tight angle Warlow saw his effort parried by Scott and hoofed away from danger by Tom Birch. The 84th minute then saw Peers race to the right side by-line before delivering a low cross that again the keeper could only parry away but no Albion player was following up close enough to capitalise. In the final minute, as Albion kept up their advance play, Peers sent a shot across the face of goal, again the keeper got a touch and again Mr Smith got his decision wrong.

Good report Chad as usual summed up the game for me which again but for ridiculous decisions by the officials we could have won. Football’s all about opinions and I thought we made a mistake taking Morning off. I think we should have left him on and played it over the top of their defence as this lad looks like he can catch pidgeons and their back four was tiring. Not having a go here but we could have played more on the break later on and has already been pointed out closed the game off more when 2 1 up.
I thought Rod was magnificent as he got kicked and pushed loads of time but kept getting up and causing them no end of problems with his ability to hold the ball and do the unexpected. I can’t fault any of the lads but we did lack that bit more power in midfield and Macca would have had a point to prove to their manager. Fleetwood could in theory now catch us and I’ve got to be honest they worry me. Any other year and the league would almost have been won by us even at this stage but they keep grinding out results too. Lets hope they slip up and we re energise for our next match at Matlock which again is no easy task. Cmon the Lads keep it going!!

Fleetwood play Gateshead tomorrow and then go to Leek on Saturday i think. Neither will be easy.

I think not only did we miss Macca, but also a fully match-fit Alex Brown. It’s a shame he couldn’t of played the full 90, but it probably came a few weeks too early for him.

I agree with you to a certain extent here Robbo and ideally we need to build up Alex’s match fitness gradually over the next 3 or 4 games though I’ve got to stress Alex did ok considering his lay off and is undoubtdly a class player. Bound to miss people like Stevie Brodie and Macca though because undoubtly its the routine kind of work these lads do that tends to go unnoticed like covering and marking people and just getting a foot in to put the other teams off as well as making a pass or scoring a goal from midfield. We are lucky in having the luxury of some great players who don’t always start who come on and definately make a contribution to the game e.g young Ian Kearney who would grace any defence in this league and will become a stalwart for us.
What I do find awesome is the thought of Morning and Peers raiding down the wings against some of the opposing teams where the defence is lacking pace these two lads will murder them!! I think as we’ve said elsewhere quite often, what Jim and Nige have done is brillaint because every time someone has gone we’ve brought in a player to improve the squad. I know its early doors but Morning looks to me a player who will improve us with bags of pace and an eye for goal. I think this is probably the most exciting team we’ve had since 1990 though I did like the Nigel Gleghorn teams but that was largely down to him playing in them!! Anyway here’s to 3 points at Matlock next Tuesday because that will be a big step toward the league championship as they are a tough team to beat.

I also think it just shows how far we have come when some see a draw away at Hednesford as not a good result! On the theme of signings I think bringing in Evans has lifted Rod’s game up another notch, maybe knowing that 3 players fighting for 2 places everyone knows they have to be 110% to keep their place.

Good point Picko. Rod has been tremendous these last few games and I thought Saturday he was brilliant not only with his ability but his attitude where he didn’t retaliate but just dusted himself off and got back into the fray working hard for the team. As you say we now see a draw at Hednesford as 2 points lost rather than a point gained but the truth is it was a good result!!

A game we should of won but the point could still be valuable come the end of the season. As long as we keep picking up points away from home and winning our home games then we should be fine.

The team do need to get a bit ugly sometimes though. We could learn a thing or 2 from the likes of Eastwood and Frickley when it comes to this! If it’s needed, take the ball to the corner, smash it out of the ground, take your time with set pieces, whatever it takes to secure the win!

To Greg 7
Is that really the "Witton way"? THey have got to the top playing good football as I understand it, now is not the time to panic.
WHS.

WHS,

I am not panicing I can assure you of that! My personal opinion is that we need to ensure that we close games out thats all. If that means that we time waste for the last few minutes and play ugly to hold onto a lead then there’s no problem. This is by no means a dig at the team but its just my opinion.

At this point in the season the ‘Witton way’ goes out of the window and points are all that matters.

Have you been down to witness the ‘Witton way’ at any point this season? :-X

WHS being a rugby fan u should be familiar with the tactics used by both union and league teams when they are leading with minutes to go - it is " up your jumper time " as Stevo says. Get your aries down to Wincham Park, we will be needing extra gatemen for the Fleetwood game on Bank Hol Mon.

Going to the corner flag might be something you do with 5 minutes to go. But, on a related theme, there was more than one occasion last season when, one goal up, Witton sat back to "protect their lead" and messed it up big time. Unbelievably frustrating because you can see it happening right before your eyes and you know what’s going to come. As a fan it’s bewildering to see your team be so superior to the opposition for most of the match, only to see them deliberately change tactics and have to witness the opposition attacking (because Witton are letting them, not because they’re any good) for the latter part of the match.

So what’s the best policy when 2-1 up with 20 minutes to go? Sit back and defend the lead, or try and get another goal to win 3-1 and kill off the game completely. I know what I’d prefer them to do.

I would happily do a gate on Bank Holiday Monday but I do fear my ability as a "Jonah" The team is winning, I don’t want to "Jonah" that. I still send a bit of cash now and again, I think I should leave it at that until the team are certain of promotion. As for "sticking it up your jumper" only desperate sides do that and Witton surely are not desperate. Big weekend for us Rugby fans, Six Nations starts on Saturday, "COME ON ENGLAND"!!!
WHS.

Agree to a certain extent thats why I thought we should have left Morning on on Saturday and played him up front. Then played on the break banging it over the top of their defence. With his pace he’d have got on the end of something when their defence was tiring and we perhaps could have gone 3 1 up and put them out of the game. But hey what do I know!! Jim and the lads have got us up there and I’m sure Jim does things from a more informed position than we the fans do. There is not a better manager in non league footie with only Liam Watson anywhere near as far as I’m concerned but with some nice people as managers who are ok like Alvin at Marine and Steve Burr at Stalybridge. No time for the likes of Telfords manager or some of the other one’s like the guy at Frickley who likes his team to intimidate the opposition.
