Isn't football funny

United move 5 points clear with 4 games until the derby. After the derby there are two games left, so if United are anywhere between 4 and 9 points ahead going into that game, they could clinch the title there.

I’m sure it’s not entirely what the Sheiks intended when they pumped £1bn into City, but at least there’s half a chance they could see the trophy lifted at Eastlands.

That would be a classic case of schadenfreude.

scha·den·freu·de [shahd-n-froi-duh]
noun
satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else’s misfortune.

Didnt he used to play for Spurs?

He might have had something to do with Wagner’s Ring.

I believe two words have cost City this season, Balotelli and Tevez. But I am still bewildered as to how this United team are where they are, Ferguson must be a genius to turn a pigs ear into a silk purse.
WHS.

Simple - you create history, not buy it

Oh come on!!! United have spent a lot over the years, they are not all home grown. De Gea, Ferdinand, Evra, Young, Valencia, Rooney, Carrick, the list goes on and on. The days of Giggs, Scholes, Beckham and the Nevilles coming up from the youth team is long gone.

Dont forget Evans and Welbeck who have both featured heavily this season, and Cleverley, who probably would have done if not for injury. They might never produce another Scholes, but talent is still being developed.

Utd have spent far less than several clubs In recent years - lpool, city ,chesea immediately spring to mind and I can’t actually think of any home grown player in the Spurs squad ,Rose perhaps ? No doubt you will correct me but the point remains, utd have consistently done it last 20 years.on a return per investment basis ,it’s utd with best figures. The manager has been there 26 years which sort of makes him homegrown too .

Premier LEague have confirmed that whoever wins it, they will lift it after their last home game, unless they are away on the last day and it goes to the wire. So City spared then

Actually Danny Rose was signed from Crystal Palace. I remember it upset their Chairman at the time as the fee was fixed by Tribunal and it wasn’t that much. Jake Livermore came fromn the academy me thinks. SBL

Livermore always looks good when I see him. Tough compeition in the Spurs midfield though, especially if Huddlestone ever learns how to walk again.

My point was simply that ALL the clubs in the Premier League try to buy success and United are no different, just more successful. I’m sure there would be a bid from Ferguson if Messi ever becomes available!!
WHS.

WHS, here are the top ten net spenders per season since 2006 - arguably United’s most successful period, with three European Cup finals during that time:-

1 Manchester City £85,674,000
2 Chelsea £31,180,000
3 Liverpool £16,662,000
4 Tottenham £14,640,000
5 Aston Villa £13,680,000
6 Sunderland £12,535,000
7 Stoke City £11,041,000
8 Manchester United £10,320,000
9 Bolton £10,000,000
10 Fulham £9,220,000

Apologies if it doesnt format correctly :stuck_out_tongue:

That might be a little misleading because the Ronaldo sale skews the figures somewhat, but here are details of the spends since the Premiership began in 1992:-

Purchased Gross Sold Nett Per Season

1 Chelsea £744,440,000 £228,475,000 £515,965,000 £25,798,250
2 Manchester City £649,180,000 £166,053,000 £483,127,000 £24,156,350
3 Liverpool £552,205,000 £325,970,000 £226,235,000 £11,311,750
4 Manchester United £483,150,000 £305,840,000 £177,310,000 £8,865,500

Again, the table might not format well.

So yes, United spend a lot, but of the three teams who have spent more, they only have 4 titles between them, demonstrating that it’s not necessarily about money.

QED WHS

If it’s not about money tell that to all the other clubs in the Premiership who don’t have much!!
My point was simply that ALL the clubs, even the most lowly ones try to buy success even if that success is simply staying up. Ferguson has one major thing going for him, the “pulling” power of the name “Manchester United”. Players are more likely to sign for them than for say Everton or even Spurs or Newcastle. The fact that Berbatov and Carrick left Spurs for United is a case in point as is Rooney, a real scouser leaving Everton for United. Spurs will have difficulty holding on to Modric and Bale and you can bet your life if Fergie comes in for them they won’t want to go anywhere else. United are not a football club they are an institution and have been since Munich, it was that tragedy that took them out of the ordinary run of the mill club to a world wide phenomenon. It continues to this day, no club in the world has so many foreign supporters, not even the likes of the Milan clubs or Barcelona or Real Madrid.
WHS.

Course, money is important, but other factors have a big say (ie Ferguson and United’s experience v City’s £1bn).

If it were solely about money Liverpool would be in the top 4 and Andy Carroll would be the best player in the league :silly:

Mookie, who has a “Squeaky Bum” now?
WHS.

As any united fan will tell you WHS ,it’s been City’s to lose since they bust the bank and set off like a train for a record opening season spell, leaving Utd and other bigger spenders in their wake .The odd ABU which you clearly are,may still have his excitement to come though the bookies say different . I am sorry about that but then the bookies and utd tend to win these things no matter how much bitterness this may cause .That been said, with 6 games to go before tonight ( almost 20% of the season by the way) you wouldn’t find any Utd fans celebrating prematurely. We’ve been here beforei and in many ways IT IS about bottle and squeaky bums but fortunately it’s only ABU’s that talk out of them. Neither do I get the unnecessary reference to Munich - uniteds biggest ever attendance was before Munich (at Maine Rd by the way)…so my comments of a week ago still stand ,greatness can not be bought

Maybe a little premature after the weekend!

In fairness, at least it gives us a little more excitement instead of the damp squib it was shaping up to be.

Terrible day at the office last night, seems like the players also felt it was over. Cant be a coincidence that Scholes was rested and we turned that dross in.
