A very poor second half.
First half Albion were dominant, the only side that played any football, as well as a blatant pen, poor finishing and not having the rub of the green let us down. The second half Ossett continued to hoof the ball at every available opportunity, however they did during the second half subsidize this with some excellent crosses and JK made a couple of tremendous saves.
A point yes, but based on this showing I feel more teams will leave Ossett with maximum points this term.
PS Are the people of Ossett showing what they feel about the quality of football being served up because the lack of support/supporters was quite astonishing.
Can’t argue with any of that. The ref was the only person in the ground that didn’t think it was a penalty. Brown got to the ball first and the keeper put his hand out at his feet. Had that of gone in we might have gone on to score further in the first half. Brown and Lloyd were superb for the last 15 minutes of the first half.
I know the pitch is the same for both sides but it was rock hard today, in desperate need of watering if nothing else. The grass was brown!
Maybe not the best performance but which would your prefer 5 clean sheets or a 5-0 defeat. Keep the faith!
A point earned at the end of the day and to quote the famous Phil Flavel "Could be he point that clinches promotion for us in May"…
Anyway… we played well in the first half got some geat passes together, Warlow hit a belter of a shot that was saved well by Ossetts’ keeper (who played excellent)
Second half was similar to the second half at their place last year, they put us under pressure alot more than in the first half and to be honest I was happy with the point in the end…although I think we did deserve victory if you look over the full 90 minutes.
I disagree that teams will do better at Ossett I think it is a difficult place for any team to go but we shall see…
Overall well done to Jim, Nige and the lads I think in all honesty I would have taken a point and a clean sheet before todays game.
I’m sure you’ll agree this to be a better report than the disgusting one that’s appeared in the Non-League paper - was the guy actually there?
UniBond League – Premier Division - Saturday September 8th 2007
OSSETT TOWN 0 WITTON ALBION 0 att. 158
TEAM: Kennedy; Coo, Spearritt, Pritchard, Brownhill; Peers, Lloyd, Brown, Brodie (Kearney 75), Warlow (Dillon 86), Crowe (Proffitt 65).
Man of Match : Rob Lloyd
If it wasn’t for the customary travelling hoards of bedecked Albion fans then this match may well have seen the lowest ever Premier Division attendance. The teams were greeted with an Ingfield Stadium playing surface desperately in need of a good watering. The resultant unpredictable bouncing of the ball playing a good part, certainly in restricting Albion’s style of play.
The home side hadn’t managed a single goal in any of their four home matches this season and throughout the first half it was clearly evident as to why. Albion constantly took the match to their hosts but either took too much time in their build ups or were thwarted by the excellent goalkeeping of Piotr Skiba. The custodian though was most fortunate in the 22nd minute when everyone gathered behind his goal clearly saw him take Alex Brown’s legs from under him near the by-line. Match referee Christopher Ackers from Doncaster decided that there was no foul committed and in his own words later, that Skiba had played the ball. Strange therefore that not only was Brown not cautioned for simulation but that the match restarted with a goal-kick! Ackers admitting he got the latter decision wrong – errrmmm!
The first attack of the game saw Rob Lloyd, who throughout looked to have benefited from sitting the Buxton match out, created good space but send his shot just wide of the left upright. Skiba in the 9th minute then somehow managed to beat away a ferocious pile-driver of a shot from Adam Warlow. Lloyd then shot over the target following good interchange work. On 18 minutes Brown was fouled on the edge of the area but Mark Peers sent his free kick over the bar. Just before the penalty incident Aiden Savory’s shot forced the first save out of Jon Kennedy. Peers did get the ball in the net but the whistle had already been blown for an infringement. The last few minutes of the half saw Witton lay siege on the home goal with the ball bouncing all around the goal area as Warlow, Lloyd and Steve Brodie all attempted to bring it under control and get in a clear shot on goal.
8 minutes after the restart Liam Brownhill danced down the wing but with Warlow and Dean Crowe waiting in space he chose to shoot straight at the keeper. Town then finally woke up and for the first time we saw the Albion’s rearguard back pedalling. It needed a breathtaking save from Kennedy, who launched himself in typical Schmeichel style, to deny Scott Jackson by acrobatically flicking the shot clear with the back of his right heel.
Jim Vince’s introduction of substitutes almost paid off again when immediately Dorryl Proffitt’s pass brought a Witton throw and from it Brodie in the area was crowded out but Brownhill following up saw his shot kicked away by Skiba. Albion’s next attack saw the keeper this time turn Brownhill’s shot around the post with the resultant corner cleared as fat as Lloyd who sent his shot just over the bar. Witton’s best chance though came in the 77th minute when from a breakaway Lloyd, rather than fully advance to shoot himself laid the ball left to Peers but the winger was guilty of wildly blazing the ball wide. Immediately at the other end though Rob O’Brien was equally guilty when a high ball from the left saw him facing an open goal only for him to slash his volley well wide of the right upright.
In the end a point was gained as Albion held onto 2nd spot in the League, no goal conceded – now 478 minutes since last breached, no bookings and no serious injuries before Tuesday’s important home game with Matlock.
