A deserved win against a dirty side, on a rubbish pitch. Everything a Wittoner should have expected from today’s game.
We were easily the better team, trying to play football, whilst Cables hoofed the ball downfield all game long. It was from our own hoofed balls that we had some of our best chances in the first half, with a couple of good chances following breakaways.
From where I stood it was the correct decision to award the red card. Anthony Sheehan picked the ball up in the centre of the field and ran towards the edge of the box. As he approached the D, Prescot’s centre-back launched himself into a two-footed, stud’s up lunge. He got a touch on the ball, but a much bigger touch on Sheehan. The referee had no hesitation in awarding the free-kick and showed a straight red to the Prescot number 5.
Olly James was then substituted before the kick was taken, due to a recurrence of his ankle ligament injury. Tom Schofield replaced him, and was then the quickest to react when Danny Andrews’ curling free-kick bounced back across goal off the left post. He didn’t get as much of a touch as he would have liked, and he looked horrified as a defender attempted to hook it clear, but it had just enough on it to go in.
In my opinion, the referee got the penalty decision wrong. Danny Andrews ran into the box, heading for the by-line when the defender slid into the tackle. The defender got a touch on the ball to send it out for a corner, and Andrews appeared to get tripped when the defender’s trailing leg came round. I thought it should have been a corner, but the referee pointed to the spot. Sheehan then placed it beautifully into the top left corner.
I think we all thought that would be it, although we should have scored more, but then Prescot had a long throw from our left into the box. We failed to deal with it, and the ball made it’s made through to the Cables’ striker, who put it into the bottom corner with his back to goal.
The nerves set in, at least with me, until Witton cleared the ball from the box, and Liam Newman, who had replaced the injured Schofield, turned the last man, and then made his way towards goal, before finishing past the goalie to score.
A good win, and definitely needed.
