Rule Changes

What rule changes in football would you like to see or what rules would you like to see reintroduced?

The good old fashioned shoulder charge should be re-introduced !

And there should be a restriction on the number of times Club-Shop posts in one day !

Make keepers take goal kicks from the side the ball went out on, all they do now is waste time. I would also like to see the “Sin Bin” introduced, seems unfair to me that a man committing a foul is not punished in the game he did it in, but gets a suspension probably months later after getting more yellow cards.
WHS.

Stop referees makin the rules up as they go along, like that clown who was in charge at Stoke on Sunday. If he’d one of our best no wonder the FA appears to be a laughing stock! SBL

Actually I think you have a point about making the rules up as they go along, Messi should have been sent off I am told but the Ref realised who it was and didn’t give a second yellow card. I also wish the idiots on the TV would stop saying things such as “There was minimal contact”. It doesn’t matter how much contact there is, it’s a FOUL! And the rule that a player has to leave the field if he has had treatment is simply daft.
WHS.

Talking about rules, can anyone tell me why Frank Lampard wasn’t booked for going into the crowd after scoring his penalty on Monday night?

Personally i would like the petty bookings to stop for players celebrating goals. Going to the fans or taking your shirt off shouldn’t be an offense (i’m sure Mose would agree!).

Reading Harry Rednapp’s article on Sky Sports news he advocates having a referee in each half. Makes sense but in the lower leagues its all extra cost. For me simple playback technology exists so lets use it. In Super league and in Crickets its clear cut. Its a try or a run out or it isn’t. Simples. afew of those incidents at Stoke on Sunday afternoon would have took the fourth official two seconds to decide + it takes the presure away from the referee straight away. Over to you Sep. SBL

Make it an offence when a defender “ushers” the ball out of play by obstructing an opponent.

Right…in no specific order…

Use TV replays for key incidents. Allow managers 2 “appeals” per game
Take time-keeping duty off the referee. Use the Rugby model of external time-keeper who starts and stops the stadium clock during abnormal stoppages.
Speed up taking free-kicks - this ceremonial free-kick routine is bollocks with the ref pacing 10 yards at his leisure - I like the USA method of having a spray to mark the ball position and wall - get on with it. Check it out next time on TV - I reckon between 1-2 mins per free kick near the box.
Introduce orange card for technical offences. There has to be more granularity is measuring the seriousness of an offence.
If a player requires treatment from the physio, he has to leave the pitch for 5 minutes - well he’s injured isn’t he? Cue a number of out of work physios.
Foul and Abusive language is a red card offence - no change - just need the refs to apply the law.
Video evidence applied and retrospective punishment even if the ref judged the initial incident
and there’s more…
Allow standing at top level games
Celebrating a goal is not a cautionable offence (except Mr Adebayor, who went clearly over the top!), neither is taking your shirt off.
Managers and players should be allowed to say what the hell they like to TV/Radio without fear of punishment. And Officials must also be interviewed for post match views.
And finally…all London clubs to be deducted 30 points at the start of the season.

I know a lot of this is aimed at top level football, but, that’s where most of the issues are.

Cracked it!

THe MAJOR problem with using video for football matches is that it is a free-flowing game unlike cricket and rugby which have regular stops and starts as does American Football. What happens if a goal is ruled out by the ref? Does the game continue or does it stop it to look at a TV? No, despite it sounding a good idea I think it would cause more problems than it solves. I am not against goal line technology if it works, but if it is like most modern technology it will break down all the time!!
WHS.

Don’t agree. Modern football is not a free flowing game. I remember Sky TV used to publish the “ball in play” time and got embarrassed when it was consistently 20-25 minutes per half! Plenty of time for video replays.

If I pay for 90 minutes of football,I should get 90mins. American football may not be everyone’s cup of tea but at least the punters get 1 hour of football! And no, they don’t stop the game deliberately for TV adverts.

Offside rule needs rethink.Offside is offside even if a player is not in line of play.Big Sam used to exploit it when he was manager of Bolton Wanderers.

Simple game football - the more rules you introduce the more managers and players find a way round them !

I think Bill Shankly said of the “Not interfering with play” statement that if a players is NOT interfering with play he shouldn’t be on the pitch! I have to say I agree. I also agree with eli, the rules need curtailing not increasing. Golf is a case in point, it has more rules than it knows what to do with, it has three or more types of water for God’s sake. Henry Cotton said the rules should say, “You put the ball on the tee and you hit it until you are on the green where you can pick it up to clean it, then you hole out, end of”. I think Football should start to think along the same lines. "You kick the ball not the man, if it goes out of play you kick it back in. When the ball crosses the little white line between the “sticks"it’s a goal and the ref is right even when he is wrong, end of.” Yes I know that is a bit simplistic, but you get my drift.
WHS.

Only 2 changes for simplify offside rule, and book diving or exaggerating players ( eg get a tap on the shin and look like they have been shot)

Tap on the shin is STILL a foul. According to the laws you MUST make contact with the ball BEFORE you make ANY contact with the player. This law is badly misunderstood by players, officials and supporters.
WHS.

i know its a foul what i object to is players overplaying the impact injury and rolling around ! any suspicion by the ref of feigning or diving book em ( or shoot em )

Continentals brought that rubbish in.
WHS.

Blame World cup in Atlanta WHS.Rule became silly from then on.
