Witton Albion v Glapwell, U1S

I thought first half we played some good football, their defending as a team was all over the place because of the pressure applied.Three very well taken goals with a couple of errors thrown in for good measure, resulted in frustration and the wheels falling well
and truly off the wagon.

Steves dismissal was the end product of a very bad day for the referee. We know Steves reputation but his shove would not have toppled my eleven year old lad.The ref was sucked into that situation and fell for it.

The farce of Garys dismissal made the ref look ridiculous and i thought Gary handled the situation very well.

There is no need to fix anything that is not broke. If the manager has a contract extention then i applaud the chairman for a good bit of business.

I have tried to wait till I’ve calmed down till posting so here goes…wish me luck!

We totally and completely dominated the first half of todays game against Glapwell, who are a damn good side and are among the favourites for automatic promotion! How on earth we went in at half time three nil down has got me beat! They had three shots and all three went in, I didn’t really see any p*ss poor defending, just bloody good (possibly lucky!)finishing!

The penalty which hit the post really was the turning point, that goes in, we are dominating the game, maybe another goal, maybe the keeper sent off (he COULD have been for sure!) the Glapwell fans were saying that we were “bossing the midfield”.

Second half we continued to be in the game especially after our goal, the sending off was a bloody shame, you can understand the frustration we ought to have had a free kick, but what Foster did was totally unacceptable, stupid and irresponsible! We still could have got something dammitt!!! The managers (both of them!) being sent to the stand was just stupid (by the oficials). The reaction to that by some (“keep walking out of the ground and don’t come back”) fans doesn’t help really!

So a fantastic performance at Leek away, a bit of a billox at Brigg away, and then today, what do you reckon? We have no right at all to win every game at this wretched level, we have no right to get back up!

Under a certain other manager we were constantly winning fair play things, but bottled it every single time, now we are indisciplined, whats the answer…f*cked if i know!!

Thats it!

Mario even though I can see where your coming from regarding the play before the goals went in, the end product is not there.

i looked very closely at the players today, liked when they lost possession, support attacks on second phase , to the body language mentioned in my previous post , discipline isnt good despite refs involvement anyway its just not good enough and im hoping that they can get a grip. very quickly.

While I accept that lack of funds and injuries are holding the club back I am not too happy either with the lack of discipline shown by the manager and some of the players. We have a reputation as a “family club” that people are proud to be associated with and the antics today tarnished that proud history. As for the manager and his abilities I am not qualified to say too much, but I do believe that even with our funding level we SHOULD be at the very least have been looking at the play offs this season, if Mr. Finley fails to get us there then I do believe he should go as I believe even a moderate team would win this league given the right tactics and motivation.
As for the game, bad decision by the Ref over the penalty, Keeper should have been sent off. Had that happened we would have won the game and no one would be moaning.
WHS.

My take on today (at least the journey home was 2.5 minutes and not 2.5 hours).

I thought we started brightly and looked the better side in the opening exchanges. They scored against the run of play but to our credit I thought we responded well. Had we have scored the penalty and taken the lead it may have changed the game, against a side like Glapwell we could not afford to have missed this opportunity (we have to find a confident penalty taker, having missed something like 9 now this season)!

Our second penalty claim looked more clear-cut than the first and I can’t believe it was not given. Their second and third goals in quick succession before the break were sucker punches and were the result of some slack defending but were clinical finishes from our opponents. The quality of finishing on the day was a big part of the outcome although I thought we were a bit unlucky to be three down at half time and effectively out of the game.

The discipline at the moment is poor, to have the manager sent to the stands for two weeks running (whatever the reason and apparent justification) it tells its own story, as do the two consecutive red cards. We will now miss our captain for three games and our top scorer for three games. Losing Foster when we did today ruled out any opportunity to get anything from the game.

We’ve now lost 10 games this season and I don’t believe we can achieve consistency to challenge for the play-offs and are therefore most likely resigned to another season in this division. I hope I am wrong. It does concern me that with the players we have that we are not doing better. I would question the team spirit, there were times in the first half when players were shouting abuse at one another.

I think we have to accept that the majority of officials at this level will be inept, indeed good ones will be the exception and not the rule. Frustrating as this is, berating them constantly is not going to help our cause (probably the opposite). I’ll shout in disbelief as much as anyone but after decisions have been and gone they are not going to be changed.

The top four look like they might be pulling away and frankly Chasetown, who have beaten us home and away, are a better bet than us for the last play-off spot, especially given their two games in hand.

As previously posted, with Stamford, Carlton and Spalding our next three opponents at home in the league we do have a chance to keep in touch, however the overall attitude, discipline and lack of cohesion from the manager/team is questionable and after the above three games I think decisions need to be made with a view towards next season.

I said last week that “it’s not good enough” and stand by my comment. The chairman and a great number of volunteers (like the ground staff, Neil and others) have all worked incredibly hard to keep this club afloat, as have the many fans who contribute financially. Sadly I think these people are being let down on the pitch.

Man of the match today, Peter Heler. Worked hard and showed more desire than many.

Looking at the Unibond League table,we currently share the best away record with Glapwell and Chasetown. All three teams have 25pts and we have more away wins than Glapwell,Mickleover,Sheffield and Kidsgrove. All is certainly not lost.Perhaps our envious away form will continue and offset the fact that Wincham Park is not a fortress.

To cheer ourselves up,think back to that majestic away performance at Colwyn Bay and Bradleys outrageous winning goal,a goal that would not of looked out of place even if Kempes himself had scored it.

I still think the criticism of Gary is a little bit harsh,we play good football and are still very much in the race.

We are now witnessing a few red cards,in the early ninetees this was nothing new.The battling Connor brothers,Grimshaw,Anderson,McNeilis,Cuddy and Jarvis. These players were hardly shrinking violets and most definately did not attend church on a sunday morning,if you catch my drift.

FORZA WITTON AND ALL WHO SAIL IN HER.

As ever we played some good football but one goal and few serious chances is a poor return.
Glapwell have what it takes, compare them with the likes of Fleetwood and Eastwood. They don’t win many admirers but they win leagues.
Their no 5’s theatrics were outrageous but Foster barged him 10 yards from the liner,it was bound to be a red card.
Realistically we have to focus on 5th place and that won’t be easy. Suspensions are going to be crucial.
For the manager to be sent off two weeks running speaks for itself but now is not the time to change. The subsequent disruption would finish off whatever challenge we can mount.
It’s a case of get promotion he can stay, fail to go up he goes.

“Foster barged him”…aye, with his head!

Sorry to say it but yesterday I left the ground at half time, I didnt dare stay for the second half in case I said something I might later regret, this is the first time I have ever left a football match early(at any level).
I honestly cant understand people on this forum complaining about stayaways, what do you expect when the team puts in a performance like that yesterday. Ref was appauling granted but he was equally poor for both teams. The total lack of conviction from that team yesterday (management included) was nothing short of criminal.
On yesterdays showing we do not have a chance of making the play offs, things have to get better and now, Im not saying sack the manager because we are in a difficult period of the season and the disruption caused would be terminal for witton, but maybe we need a motivator bringing in to help Gary, I have very grave doubts about his man management ability and his communication is a bullying tactic at best, and it shows.
It is ok for evrybody saying get behind the team and support the team, fair enough but fans deserve something in return good performancies. come on witton.

Good point about the away wins Mario but how many points can you see us picking up in the 6 away games left to play ? We have got to go to Glapwell Rushall Mickleover Belper Cammell Laird and Stamford. I can’t see us picking up many ! We will have to win all our home games if we are to achieve the play-offs I think !

Dodger’s right Glapwell look like a team put togethet to get out of this league. Do we ?

We should write off Foster now. We all knew what he was about, he has shown his true colours now. He had time to count to ten before confronting the Glapwell player but chose not to.

The manager now has 3 games to prove himself or the fans will be on his back.

Another point that worries me is if we do get out of this league are we going to survive with higher wages on the crowds we are getting now. Nearly 50% of our crowd are concessions,we have a stadium that is falling apart, increasing debts and rely on the same people for fund raising.

KTF That’s Keep the Faith

Having slept on it my view ofthe game. We dominated most of the first half creating openings that we didnt take(like at leek) their keeper should have gone , poor defending for 2 of their goals, foster lost it and right to be sent off. Another loss against a team who to be honest werent that good . I still think we will make the play offs but only if we take our chances and get our defence organized and don`t give silly goals away.I saykeep the manager till the end of the season and then look at thngs again.

A month ago i said…

There are good enough players in the squad to challenge for promotion, but we cant put a run of wins together. How we can walk all over Sheffield like we did but then pick up 1 point from the last 2 home games is beyond me.

Unless we can go on a massive winning run then i think it really is season over…[/quote]

and was apparently talking rubbish, as we were still allegedly going to win the league!! A month later and we are starting to look like not making the play offs!!!

3 great results against Kidsgrove, Quorn, and Goole. And then back to the habit of picking up 1 point in 3 games. It is the story of our season, and is why we probably wont go up.

I think people are going overboard slightly - we aren’t in a relegation battle incase anybody has failed to notice this!!!

I think talk of budgets is missing the point. We have already got a squad of players more than capable of winning this league - so why aren’t we?

People are saying get rid of Foster now…are you f**king serious?!? You want a successful team, but in the next breath you want to get rid of our top scorer?!? Jesus… So United should get rid of Rooney coz he’s had the odd red card? Liverpool should get rid of Gerrard? Chelsea should move Drogba on?!? Get real please. Has anybody actually remembered that Foster is human?! Of course he has faults - he is playing at this level for a reason!!! The bloke has scored a shed load of goals for us, and then lost his place in the side. When get gets back in he is playing wide left. I’m guessing that’s pretty frustrating. So when we are getting beat at home he gets the red mist…he is hardly the first, and he certainly wont be the last.

Gary being sent to the stand is the bigger concern, especially as it’s 2 weeks on the spin. And of course on the back of his previous conduct when last here, then it is a worry. I hope the chairman will address this. Regardless of whether he deserved to be sent to the stand or not, he will not have helped himself by marching on to the pitch to argue with the ref at half time…

I do sympathise for Gary in that we have a small squad and he has rarely been able to field his strongest team for a run of games - which is obviously a contributing factor in our inconsistency. However, there are a lot of decision that i have had to question - such as leaving Foster on the bench at home to Lairds when we needed a goal.

I think back to the Rushall game at the start of the season when Fozzie netted a late winner, and the whole team ran to Gary to celebrate. That seems a very very long time ago now…

Should Gary go? I certainly think that he will leave sooner rather than later. The fans are no longer behind him, and as Gary Megson found out, that does mean that he is fighting a losing battle. The question has to be though, who will come in to replace him? How many players would follow Gary out of WP? We can’t make any knee-jerk reactions whilst the play offs are still within touching distance.

Personally i would see what happens over the next 3 games. If we take maximum points then we should stick till the summer and then re-evaluate. If we have a disappointing return from these 3 games then i think we need to accept that we wont go up and cut our cloth accordingly. There is no point in throwing bad money after good. If Gary quit in protest, then maybe that wouldnt be such a disaster…

The penalty issue is a curious one…is it a confidence thing? Is there a lack of confidence throughout the team? Cleary it affected Lamb enough to see him withdrawn at half time.

The system we are playing at the moment is dictated to us by the personell available to us, so i wont criticise Gary for that. Warner is an improvement on what we had before, so again i think criticism of his signing is a little unfair.

Yes we do dominate games, but is some of this to do with the way our opposition set up to play us? We are classed as a ‘big team’ at this level, and play with 3 attackers. My tactics as an opposing manager would be to soak up the pressure and hit us on the break…is that maybe what is happening? Especially at WP.

The team is good enough - there certainly aren’t 5 or 6 better teams than us in this league - but our form is patchy. From challenging for the title a month ago we are now worried that we wont make the play offs. We have to get behind the team (and the manager for however long he is here), but quite frankly it isn’t acceptable at the moment.

Right, now i have gotten that off my chest; can we please ban some of the knob heads who shout absolute rubbish from behind the goal?? They don’t contribute other than in a negative fashion. I say ‘some’…but it is singular to be fair.

One more thing to add…Gary has certainly had his share of mis-fortune this season. I see Stuart McCall quit his post as Bradford manager as he feels that maybe the club needs a ‘lucky’ manager… Is Gary maybe not a ‘lucky’ manager either?

“Performances have been OK this season and we haven’t got what we’ve deserved. But it’s a results business and I haven’t got enough results for this club.”

Sounds familiar…

Rough justice? Not when you have seen Fossie get other players sent off.

Agreed TT, Foster just puffed his chest out and shoved into their player. If the player stays on his feet then Foster gets a yellow card, but he can have few complaints given his ‘previous’.

I still believe that Foster is a superb goalscorer at this level and of all the new arrivals this season he has probably been the best.

Robbo not sure the manager ever had the fans many did not want him back for various reasons, I dont think his methods and mannerisms do him any favours but he wont change, however I dont mind him being the manager if he pulls it all together and does his talking through the team He needs to steady the defence quickly get a fixed shape & style and then stick to it 4 3 3 with players out of position is not working, for sure he has a had bit off bad luck with injuries but the discipline is in his hands, We should be challenging and we are not ! and I dont believe our budget is that bad compared to others in this league ? so I agree with you if he does not get it sorted he will be gone before long however Im hoping he gets it sorted because that will be for the betterment of the club, We will have to disagree on Warner I thought he was very poor yesterday and that matched his form last time he was here, hes very small, gets beaten easily, gets caught in possession, not pacy, leaves gaps and exposes the back 4 - other than that he ok

Personally i rate Warner. Has to be better than Neville?

Robbo, Napoleon said “I don’t want great Generals, just lucky ones”. But if you are going along that line that means Pritch has to go, for as far as I know we have only ever gone down whilst Pritch has been at Witton except when we were “promoted” when the league set up was changed. Pritch has been our GREATEST ever servant, do we dump him because he is “Unlucky”? Personally I was not happy when Mr. Finley was appointed but I said at the time if he got results then great. But he has not got results, he is not well liked and his disciplinary record is very poor, three very good reasons he should go if we don’t gain promotion. Make Pritch manager, he will command respect, and get in a good coach, Gil Prescott is free I think and he has coached abroad and in the Football League, has anyone every asked him? No? probably because he is a local lad.
WHS.

I really couldnt find anything good to say about any of 10 out field players yesterday, even some of out better players are being effected by the poor performances of others. I have never felt the need to post over critical posts but enough is enough .The squad is better than that and I felt they just turned up and took the p@@s. Yesterday was not acceptable.
I will say our keeper made two excellent saves at point blank late on

I couldn’t make it yesterday so I won’t comment on the match.

Looking at the table; with a third of the season to go we are 2 points of a play off berth. Perhaps we can put a run together at the tail end of the season and sneak into the play-offs as the form team?

Been done before.
