Witton Albion v Whitby Town Sat 23rd Feb

A bit quiet on here today aint it - so lets look forward to Sat.

Whitby have lost the last 4 I believe so on form it looks easy - but it never is

Do we make any changes - perhaps rest Liam after his England duties, play Cav at left back and bring in Ian - give Macca a run out ?

Every game is massive from now in.

I dont’t think you can pre-judge Liam’s fitness until he returns. For the time being i would presume that Liam will start.
Thought Cav looked a little bit lost on a couple of occasions in the first half of Saturday’s game, so perhaps bring Kearney in at right-back, but i expect Whitby will play for a draw so maybe Cav’s pace down the flanks will help us unlock their defense?
Would like to see Macca return, but in place of who?? Both Alex and Rob did well on Sat, as did Brodie.
Possibly be another chance for Morning to start, and i would like to see Tony Evans getting a run at some point.

I think that we must play are strongest team which for me is:-
;)JK, Kearns, prich, Barras, brownhill, brodie, Lloyd, brown, peers, thornley, warlow. :stuck_out_tongue:
unless liam does feel he needs a rest after internatinal duty. would defo like to see evans get at least half hour on the pitch.

Song for Saturday :-

‘Six - One and even Dean Crowe scored’

A rest? He is a big young lad, he shouldn’t need a rest any more than those "jesses" in the so called "English Premier League" When Spurs did the "Double" they played 49 games and used just 14 players and three of them only played about 10 games between them. Mind you, they were all Brits.

Vince wary of lowly Whitby

Feb 20 2008

by Dave Goodban, Mid Cheshire Chronicle

WITTON boss Jim Vince remains convinced his side will get promoted – but he is desperate to avoid slipping up when Albion host relegation-threatened Whitby on Saturday.

After dropping points in a 2-2 draw with Gateshead at the weekend, Vince is keen to get back to winning ways. And he says he will not be fooled by the Yorkshire side’s lowly league position.

Whitby are currently 17th in the UniBond Premier, two places and one point above the drop zone.

“They’ve done really well against the so-called bigger teams so we won’t be taking them lightly,” said Vince. “They beat Gateshead and they only just lost out to Fleetwood.

“They always seem to raise their game against the sides at the top and they’re a dangerous team. They’re fighting for survival and we’ll have to be on our game.”

Witton have no injury concerns, so Vince has a full squad at his disposal for Saturday’s game at Wincham Park.

“If we perform like we did in the second half against Gateshead, then come 5pm on Saturday we’ll have big smiles on our faces,” said Vince.

“We were awesome in the second half. I’ve watched the tape and we dominated it. I was really pleased.”

Witton are now 11 points ahead of second-placed Fleetwood, but the Lancashire side have can go above them if they win their four games in hand.

“Let’s see them go and do it,” said Vince. “We’ve got the points on the board and the pressure is on them and the other teams below us not to lose and to keep grinding out results.”

He added: “When we play at our best no one can live with us in this league.”

The Blues visit runaway leaders Witton Albion on Saturday, the scene of a seven goal mauling last season, with just one point keeping them out of the Unibond Premier Division relegation zone after a run of four straight defeats.

Albion have already hammered Town once this season on joint manager Phil Brumwell’s first game in charge last October. The 6-1 defeat was Whitby’s heaviest at the Turnbull Ground in nearly two decades, and remains the biggest away victory in the league this season. Bizarrely, the sides were all square at 1-1 going into the second half.

A year on Sunday, saw Whitby’s last trip to Wincham Park result in a painful 7-2 humbling at the hands of the Cheshire outfit. That day, the division’s current leading marksman, Adam Warlow, struck five times against the ten-man Seasiders.

Witton can currently boast the Unibond Premier’s top two goalscorers, though second-placed Tony Evans netted all his 24 goals at First Division North pacesetters Skelmersdale United.

Whitby will be hoping their own leading striker Danny Brunskill is fit to lead the line after hospital checks on a rib injury suffered at Fleetwood Town nearly a fortnight ago. There are also injury doubts attached to Alex Janes, Tom Claisse, Dave Campbell and Matty Appleby.

Albion, who stand 38 points above the Blues, have lost just twice in the league all season. However, promotion rivals Gateshead halted their 100% home record in the Premier Division since April, with a 2-2 draw last Saturday, this coming a week after the Tynesiders dumped Jim Vince’s side out of the League Cup on the same ground.

The Blues’ last victory over the Northwich-based club, came in February 2005, when last gasp goals from future Albion player Griff Jones and Liam Gildea gave Dave Logan’s Whitby a 2-0 success on the way to a play-off place.

The sides have met nine times previously, with Town winning twice, Albion four times, and three draws.

According to their forum Brunskill is out with bruised ribs.
Their predictions vary from an optimistic 2-3 away win to an 8-1 mauling!

Match Pointers
JIM Vince has warned against complacency ahead of struggling Whitby’s visit tomorrow.

The Albion boss says his team should win if their on top of their game.

"We are not going to take them lightly," he said.

"These teams can undo all the good work we have done so far if we aren’t switched on.

"An ok performance will not be enough."

He gave Albion’s first half display against Ilkeston Town last month as evidence of what can happen, pointing out that Whitby have already beaten Gateshead so far this season too. The Blues were also unlucky to lose 1-0 at Fleetwood at fortnight ago.

Rookie striker Tom Rutter starts his three-match ban tomorrow but otherwise Vince should have a full strength squad to pick from. That includes Dave MacPherson who is now fully recovered from his stomach strain. The Witton chief will also check on the fitness of Liam Brownhill after a week away on international duty with England C.

Witton lost their perfect home record in last week’s 2-2 draw with Gateshead but they still pose a formidable test for any visitor. Whitby have one of the worst away records in the UniBond Premier Division despite two wins in their past six matches on the road."

They won’t need reminding of what happened last time they visited Wincham Park.

Almost a year to the week ago Adam Warlow helped himself to five goals as Witton dished out a 7-2 mauling to the Yorkshiremen. In fact, Albion have racked up 15 goals in their past three meetings with Whitby following a 6-1 win at the Turnbull earlier this term, that man Warlow netting a hat-trick.

Phil Brumwell’s men arrive at Wincham after becoming the first team to lose to Lincoln since October last weekend. That defeat also came at an added cost after top scorer Danny Brunskill was forced off with bruised ribs. He is set for a month-long spell on the sidelines. Ant Ormerod should return to replace him tomorrow.

Brumwell says he’s looking for a reaction after last week’s embarrassment.

"No one expects us to win at Witton," he told the Whitby Gazette this week.

"So we’ve nothing to lose in that sense but we’ve got a lot to make up for after last week’s defeat to Lincoln as we let everyone down.

"We also have a few things to put right against Witton after the game at our place."

They tested us for pretty much the first half at theirs - went close on several occasions. Second half was a different story. They can be a team to be wary of, yet it depends which Witton turns up tomorrow…

Dann, even I know that Witton will be the team in Red and White stripes and they always "turn up"9Which is more than I do) Should win by at least two clear goals, maybe more. This team, as I said before, know what it is like to have something securely in their hands and then lose it, they won’t this time I am sure. May well give up one of the three Rugby games tomorrow to watch, believe me, that is a real loss for me, I am a Rugby Union "nut".
WHS.

Today is a great opportunity for us with Fleetwood playing Gateshead. I don’t think for one minute the team will be over confident or taking anything for granted. If the supporters DO go into this game thinking we will win by 2 clear goals we will come unstuck. We need to get behind te team as we did last week.
