Witton 1 Matlock 0. Thats if its not season 2007/2008 by the time this prehistoric server has pulled its finger out…oh and bloody good result lads well done:)
We were not at our best today, in fact we were pretty bloody awful. However a win is a win, none more so than this one. If we had lost today or even drawn, automatic promotion would have disappeared. The first half went to Matlock, who could have been 2 maybe 3 nil up. We showed some form during the first 45mins but we were pretty flat. The second half should have seen us get a penalty, but once again the officiating at Wincham Park was ridiculous.
The sponsors gave MOM to Mark Peers, who did a decent job, but my MOM without doubt was our goalscorer…Pritch. He was a tower (again) at the back and secured the 3 points with his late headed goal.
Useful that Telford drew (again), but a shame that Burscough won. Atleast we can now move onto our next game with another 3 points under our belt.
Well done boys!
Agree about the performance of the team today and also that pritch was immense! if wasnt for his tracking back wen keenedy was in trouble half way thru the first we cud have been one nil down and struggling! that was good enuff for man of the match as it is in my eyes! was great to be back at wincham park again! the flag looked awesome, was bigger than i expected! well done to everyone who got that arranged! was so pleased wen pritch’s header went in like! blatant penalty on peers and how on earth the ref did not see that i dont know! he knows it was a penalty cos he didnt book peersy for diving! but neva mind we got the three points and that all that matters! Does anyone know what the attendance was? Well done boys! Keep it up and lets have this league! Come on Witton!
I agree with you Stu, Darryl Proffit was next to useless. I won’t disagree with Jim…but…If I was him I would have brought Adam Foy back for the game and left Darryl at Newcastle Town to get more games under his belt. I won’t be too harsh…but…at this level a player needs to demonstrate grit, Darryl showed none![br]Posted on: March 24, 2007, 07:52:09 PM

Sorry to correct you Mr Scad but it was Liam Brownhill who was sythed down in the box, not Peers.
My God After an hour trying I can at last get my post in. Just what is going on with this site???
WITTON ALBION 1 MATLOCK TOWN 0 att 397
Kennedy; Hockenhull, Pritchard, Kearney, Brownhill; Proffitt (Frost 66), Lloyd, Brown (Gahgan 83), Peers; Warlow, Jones (Clegg 73)
How important Brian Pritchard?s 37th goal in this, his 555th match Witton career will be for his team will be become very clear over the remaining few weeks of the season. With both teams on view having ample games in hand and looking to pull back season long leaders Telford this Britannia Stadium fixture was always going to be a tight affair and proved just that.
The Gladiators were presented with a fairly simple chance in the very first minute when Liam Brownhill?s slip presented the ball to Simon Barrowclough who with keeper Jon Kennedy stranded failed to realise and when he did eventually get his shot in the home custodian was back in position to palm the effort away. Albion responded when a good run from Mark Peers saw him square the ball to Griff Jones, he in turn found Adam Warlow but the leading scorer was wide of the target. Barrowclough again had an opportunity for the visitors but just failed to make contact with Steven Warne?s cross.
A free-kick, after Rob Lloyd was bodychecked having left four visitors in his wake, saw Mark Peers 20 yard attempt drift over the right angle before on 20 minutes Dorryl Proffitt, recalled from Newcastle Town and making his first start, hit a low short that squeezed past the post. Midway through the half a quick break by Town, after Jones had failed to control the ball on the edge of the area, saw the ball with Ian Holmes and as Kennedy advanced the ball was arrowed past him but out at the far post. The first caution, slightly overdo, was then given by Mr Astley to Glenn Kirkwood. Albion again took the game to the other end and Jones?s feed found Warlow who having rounded keeper Andy Richmond saw the ball just clip his wrong foot and the chance was gone. Warlow?s next attempt was thwarted when his cheeky shot looked to be going through Richmond?s legs but at the last second was deflected. The keeper then produced a brave dive at Warlow?s feet.
Matlock again wasted a glorious chance when Kennedy, under pressure from Barrowclough, failed to get to an unnecessary back pass from Darren Hockenhull, yet again though the visitors striker delayed and this time Pritchard was back to hack away the eventual shot.
The second period opened controversially when a lunge on Brownhill saw the referee wave penalty claims aside. A long distance shot from Mark Peers saw Richmond scrambling back to produce a superb tip over and then from the resultant corner debutant central defender Ian Kearney glanced his header narrowly wide. Rob Lloyd then sent a long range effort wide for Witton before Matlock substitute Tom Cahill slipped past Kearney with his effort claimed by Kennedy at the near post.
The oh! so vital home goal came five minutes from time. Peers had done well to both control the ball and then win a corner. He laid the flag kick into Brownhill?s path and a cross to the far post was met by BRIAN PRITCHARD who produced enough power with his head to take the ball into the roof of the net despite Richmond getting a hand to the ball.
Matlock poured forward and two minutes into stoppage time Richmond came up to meet a corner-kick, his header was in turn headed goalwards by Cahill but Kennedy was well placed to push the ball over his crossbar.
Really crucial week this week. Telford have got difficult away games against a resurgent Gateshead (last two games won 6-0 and 3-0) and are away at Whitby too, never easy.
Burscough have a possible banana skin at home to Ilkeston next week, who were a bit hard done by with the 4-1 scoreline last week. Exciting times!!!
Fantastic result ! Well done to everyone at the club! It`s great to see everyone pulling in the same direction. I was well happy with how the new lad that played alongside Pritch.
I think to get 6 pnts from the last 3 games is a great achievement by the team, considering all the injuries, and suspensions the teams as had. And well done to Pritch for scoring at the right end ;D
Without Sperriitt. Barrass, Connors and Moseley that was a awesome result against one of the best teams in the league. I know Proffitt didn.t have a good game but it is hard to settle into a side straight away, unless of course your name is Kearney!! I thought he was fantastic considering it was his full debut, what a great buy… Radcliffe next, God it’s getting tight at the top, Telford must be terrified, they may not even finish in the top five!!!

Given that this is the weekend for changing the clocks, I must admit that in the first half yesterday I thought we had put the clocks back 12 months! I agree with Stu that the first half was probably our worst performance for a long while. Second half was much better, we had a good 15/20 minute spell of pressure, when we should have had a penalty (no doubt) and their keeper made a blinding save from Peers’y. When we failed to turn this pressure into a goal I was beginning to resign myself to 1 point or worse still maybe none.
Thanks to WAFC’s Player of the Year 2006/7 we got 3 of the most important points we will get this season. Surely ‘the book’ is now closed on voting, Pritch must be 1/20 on for the award, he cleared what should have been a goal off the line in the first half and wrapped up the points with a back post header…awesome from the big man. My mind was made up a month ago, long before this game, that there was only one man who ‘ticked’ every box for the award - any casual voters must surely now have had their minds made up. In truth the fact the other leading candidate (Connors) was missing was perhaps the reason we failed to get control of this game earlier. We have really missed Stevie C in midfield, you could see this on Tuesday and again yesterday. Yesterday was exactly his type of game, if he had played leftside of midfield and Peers on the right we would have been a different side.
Thought the new lad Kearney did well, difficult game for your debut and he looked quality - very impressed. Adam was unlucky, a different day he could have had at least a brace. Liam had his worst game of the season, Kennedy needs to stop throwing the ball out to invite pressure back on us, Lloyd is different class but at times needs to keep it simple, Griff has the heart of a lion.
Great result, massive three points and although again not the best performance it is the result that counts. Now is the time to win games, does not have to be attractive every week, just 3 points! Matlock are a fair side (better than Burscough and Hednesford in my opinion), so this was a must win game.
See ya Tuesday
Concerning my comment that the league is tight, this is how it stands:----
Telford, Played 34-67 Points
Burscough 35-66
Witton 33-64
Hednesford 35-61
Guiseley 35-59
Marine 35-55
Matlock 31-55
That’s 7 teams seperated by just 12 points. Odds MUST favour us with Burscough now second favourites followed bt Telford and Matlock, but Hednesford are not completely out of it yet either.

Fantastic 3 points yesterday, Pritch is a legend and was the difference between the two sides.
That said 2 out of the usual back 4 were absent along with Connors, and it can’t have been easy for the team to adapt to new personnel.
Some of the criticism of Proffitt was overly harsh, I didn’t think he applies himself particular well but he was playing in a new team against one of the best defences we have seen this year.
Their also appeared a nervousness on the pitch and on the terraces, brought about in part by the weight of expectation being placed on the team, As I’ve said before lets start by making the play offs and postpone all talk of the title until the first objective is met.
It might sound a bizarre thing to say, but i’m more satisfied by yesterday’s perfromance than i have been when we’ve been winning by 3, 4, 5, or 6 goals. Yesterday we took 3 points that we perhaps shouldn’t of done, that shows great character and is the kind of result that wins titles. Agree with Andy that the first priority is cementing a play off place, but yesterday puts us closer to the championship than any weekend of the season so far. To be without so many first team players, to play so poorly for large parts of the game, and then to snatch a late winner - thats just brilliant. I have become concerned in recent weeks with our inability to battle for the points when things aren’t going our way, for example at Ashton and Burscough. Championship winning teams need to have that mentality that they will win at all costs - Man U and Chelsea have it, Arsenal don’t for example - yesterday we showed that we do have it. Well Pritch does anyway!!! If there is one player who deserves to lift that trophy in May it’s Brian Pritchard.
Massive win yesterday, winning when playing bad is a sign of a good team overall.
WHS,how can you say Burscough are 2nd favourites ahead of Telford, theyre a point behind them and played a game more,if Telford win tomorrow at Gateshead thats telford 4 points ahead of them having played the same games! Telfords bad run cant continue for much longer I wouldnt have thought, lets just hope Burscoughs good run also ends!
I think some credit must be given to beating a decent side (with one of the best points per game ratios) in the league when missing several influencial players. It was a squad win without a doubt - everyone invloved and did their part - no doubt next Saturday;s team will be a lttle difference.
We are now facing a very nervous run in and I’m sure the players will feel the pressure themselves without us expecting them to take apart every team, especially when they are challenging team as well.
Pritch was the difference and for consistency has my vote to Wincham Rabbit - that clearance/goal line save was better than the goal and a keeper would have been applauded for that!
See you Tuesday - don’t forget the voting form guys & gals.
